It was only after James left - very early that morning - that Dalia remembered she was supposed to have met Helena the night before. It wasn't like she'd missed a crime or left the Huntress in trouble in any way. But they'd set aside a night of strategizing...and Dalia completely forgot.

She was not looking forward to going to the clock tower ( Read more... )

At first, there was no sign of Huntress. However, the door leading out to the ledge was cracked open. Meant as a way to clean the clock's face, Helena seemed rather comfortable leaning against the railing of the ledge and looking out over the city.

"Hello?" Dalia called out, going toward the door.

A moment later, Huntress stepped inside. She said nothing, but one brow quirked as she looked at Dalia.

"Sorry about last night," Dalia offered. "I--got caught up with some--personal matters."

Dalia was momentarily taken off guard, but she realized she shouldn't have been surprised. "I'm shocked you didn't climb up the side of the building and peek through the window," she snapped.

"I would have if his car wasn't there." She shrugged her shoulders and walked past Dalia to sit at the computer. "For all I knew, you hadn't come because you were lying in an alley bleeding out."

"My day took a detour early on," Dalia said, not referring to James, but to what had gone on with the mayor. "I...completely forgot...about pretty much everything."

"Murky waters if he finds out," she replied, pulling up security feed from various sources.

"He's not going to," Dalia said a bit defensively.

Helena shrugged. "As long as you keep your distance."

"Don't--tell me how to behave," Dalia shook her head. "I'm not like you, Helena. I know you see him as dispensable, as--another one of your playthings--but I don't. I like him."

"Ah yes. You can't be told how to behave, but you can tell others how to behave." She scoffed quietly, glaring at the computer monitor. "If you let him get too close, he'll notice things, and he'll figure it out. And then? It's his duty to apprehend criminals. And we are criminals."

"He's had chances to do so - he could do so - if he - if the GCPD - really wanted to. But they need us," Dalia shook her head. "This is not like what I was warning you about at all. James would never hurt me."

"And who's to say he won't? Yeah, we're helpful right now, but what if we stop being helpful? You think anyone's going to protect us then?"

"He won't." Dalia's voice was firm, because it had to be. And then, remembering something else, she added, "They're going to need us for awhile, anyway. The mayor's preparing to sign a proposal...that will eliminate most of the police presence at the docks and turn it over to private security...That's...what initially got me off track yesterday." Her voice was quieter.
