He led the way up to the main floor, then up the staircase to his study. The portraits remained on the wall, but now they flanked an unusual artwork. A pane of rippled glass, clear save for three distinct multicolored strands, hung prominently over his desk.

Taking his seat, he gestured for her to sit. "Your questions?"

"How--does it work? I just found out that I have it. Apparently my parents have known about it...but my mother didn't want to tell me." She sighed. "I talked to my dad about it...He didn't know a whole lot, other than the fact that it increases your senses, your healing rate...I heard from...someone else...that it affects each person who has it in a different way. Like my dad's healing rate is significantly higher than other people with the gene, probably. My dad said you've done research on it..."

"You have it?" He stared at her for a long moment. "I wonder why you say that. I know my Duela does, but where would you have come across that information?"

"A friend of mine has it," Dalia said carefully. "She observed traits in me--that my parents had also observed when I was growing up. I--don't have concrete scientific proof, but..." Dalia shrugged. "My dad would certainly know about what it's like to have it. So would my friend."

"This friend," his steady, snakelike stare fixed on her, "who would she be?"

Dalia shrugged, nonchalantly. "She hasn't really given me permission to tell people who she is."

"Surely, that exclusion doesn't extend to family. And you can't expect me to delve into such serious matters on the say-so of a random unnamed person."

Dalia sighed, not seeing how it mattered. Finally, after a long moment, she spoke. "Helena Kyle. We met at a fundraiser, hung out a bit after that...got to talking about our parents..."

A sharp hiss escaped his lips before he composed his features back into a neutral expression. "I see. So, Ms. Kyle believes she's a metahuman."

"She seemed to be pretty sure of it. And that I was, too. Combined with what my dad told me..." She leaned forward just slightly. "He said you'd do experiments on him sometimes, to see how having the gene affected him...I thought you could tell me...You don't have to, obviously, but I'd appreciate it."

"Tell you what? What kinds of tests I performed? Or whether I'd perform tests upon you?"

"Just--more about the gene. And--about the tests, if you thought it was relevant," Dalia said.

"You mean the tests I performed on Harvey?"

Dalia nodded. "I just--if I have this thing--which I appear to--I want to know more about it."

[arkhams_dr]

"I'm still not convinced you do have it. Duela, of course, displays a certain amount of agility, coupled with remarkable reflexes and unusual intelligence. These caused Nadine and Harvey a degree of concern during her child." He smiled. "I need not tell you that Joshua is quite gifted. What sort of indication have you or Ms. Kyle detected in yourselves?"
