As the mayor smiled in front of the press and told them about the research permits that were being given to Strohman Chemicals, Dalia stood behind him, trying not to look as upset as she felt. When the Strohman representative came forward to tell the press (in vague terms) all the benefits this would bring Gotham City, Dalia couldn't take it any ( Read more... )

Harvey wasn't paying much attention as he drove up to the house, but he was immediately alarmed when he realized there was a squad car at the curb. He parked his own car in the driveway and jumped out. He was ready to run into the house, wondering what had happened to Nadine or who had called, when he saw that the officer was still in the car. In a few quick strides he was at the driver's side window, knocking on it.

James had started doing a crossword. It wasn't his usual habit, but his partner had left it in here, and... Well. He figured it might be awhile before Dalia was ready to go. He would have gone and knocked and told her just to call him when she was ready to go home, but... He wanted to wait.

He jumped slightly when someone tapped at his window. When he saw who was there... he paled considerably. He got out of the car carefully, trying both not to stare and not to pointedly avoid staring. "H--hello, sir," he managed, more than a little nervous.

"Is there a reason you're parked in front of my house, Officer..." Harvey squinted and looked at James' nameplate. "...Gordon." His eyes narrowed. "I should've known. Your father used to make a living out of harassing me."

When he had reason to think you'd broken the law, James thought, but he was smart enough not to say it aloud.

"Dalia... needed a ride," he said, trying to straighten up to make himself look at least a bit bigger.

"Why?" Harvey demanded.

"She went to the press conference with the mayor's detail," James explained, trying to tell himself he wasn't afraid of this man. ...At least it was daylight, outside. He wouldn't get shot out here. Probably.

"She... wanted to leave early, so... I offered to take her."

"And she wanted to come here." Harvey knew something wasn't right. "Why're you still out here?"

"So I could give her a ride back to her apartment. Or to the office. Or wherever." James glanced toward the front door, hoping every second would be when Dalia would choose to come out.

"And why did she come here?" Harvey still wanted to know.

"I didn't ask," James replied. Okay, so he knew. It wasn't really his place to tell Dalia's father without her permission.

"You're a bad liar," Harvey almost growled, "And I want you off my property." Without waiting for an answer, he started for the front door.

James considered this for a moment and obeyed. He got back in his car, pulled it out of the driveway... and made a u-turn in another driveway to park across the street. He got out, leaning against the driver's side, watching the house still.

Well, he was off the property.
