Dalia headed into the coffee shop. She was tired from a long day and a bit emotionally shaken, not that she'd admit to it, but going home would mean having to deal with her parents. She didn't want to defend her job or answer the questions. Not yet, anyway. James was interesting to talk to - the handful of times they talked - and she'd probably ( Read more... )

The arrest of the two would-be assassins only made things at the precinct more hectic. While James Gordon hadn't been the arresting officer, the rookie found himself called on to do a lot of the running for the department. Add to that his talk last night with the vigilante who kept insisting that the three deaths of young socialites were murder rather than a tragic coincidence... Granted, that made more sense than three otherwise healthy young people dropping dead of sudden heart attacks, but there was nothing to prove that. A cup of coffee with a pretty girl? Just what the doctor ordered.

James entered the coffee shop and saw Dalia waiting at the counter for his drink, so he went up and ordered his own, smiling at her. "Doing okay?"

Dalia glanced over. "You're just determined to find something wrong with me, aren't you, Officer Gordon?"

James smiled at her. "Hey, I just want to make sure my fellow civil servant is okay. Nothing wrong with that, is there? I call it chivalry."

Dalia raised a brow. "Oh, is that it? Chivalry? I don't think I know of many chivalrous men in this City."

"Well, some of us try. Can't say I have the best track record, but it's the thought that counts, right?" He grinned.

"I guess it is," Dalia couldn't help smiling back at him. Her coffee arrived and she took it, waiting beside him while he got his.

"I guess it's kind of stupid of me to think you'd need the day off when nothing actually happened," James admitted, taking his coffee and leading the way to a table. He remembered to pull out a chair for her. "I mean, it's not like they got shots fired. Just got into City Hall with the weapons." He smiled sheepishly. "Sorry."

"It's all right," Dalia said, smiling a bit as he pulled out her chair. "Thanks." She sat. "I wasn't worried about myself, anyway...just...other people. The mayor, for one."

"The commissioner's insisting on giving him police protection now," James replied, taking his seat a moment later. "You've got the station number, right? Just in case you need to get in touch with us?"

Dalia rolled her eyes. "Of course I do." She paused, then frowned. "Who's he assigning to the Mayor?"

"Detective Layton and a few of his men," James answered.

Dalia frowned, a hard look crossing her eyes as she glanced back at James. "Are they trustworthy?" she wanted to know.

"With my mother's life," James replied, voice cool.

Noticing the change in his tone, Dalia said, "It's Gotham. You can't fault me for asking."
