Why am I doing this again? Dalia had been asking herself the question all day. Now it was finally time for her to leave work and head over to Crane House for dinner with Duela and Jonathan (and presumably Joshua, who never missed out on an opportunity to condescend to her) and she was still questioning ( Read more... )

Crane reappeared in the room, looking around for Duela. He opened the kitchen door to announce "Joshua claims he's not hungry, but he'll be social if that's what you want. He says he's found some interesting connections in that particular volume."

Dalia looked over and called to Duela, "Don't force him to be social on my account. I'd hate to keep a super-genius from discovering the cure for the common cold or something."

Duela laughed from the kitchen, her usual mood restored. "I'll chew him out about being rude later," she called back. "He'd just sulk if I dragged him down here right now."

"I can hardly fault him for not wanting to be interrupted. It's unlike him to miss a meal at all - I think we can forgive him this once."

"He's still going to get a talking to," Duela announced as she carried the dish into the dining room and sat it down. However, the smile on her face seemed to indicate that she wasn't worrying a great deal about the situation.

Dalia smiled back. "It smells great. Prepared with more care than what I normally eat for dinner, especially if I'm still stuck at work."

"As I said, Duela's quite an accomplished cook, with an unfortunately unappreciative audience most of the time."

Duela smirked at Dalia, putting some food on each plate before replacing them in front of those seated. "Just please tell me you've yet to crash on a sofa and sleep in the office."

"I haven't been at it that long," Dalia told Duela. "Although I wouldn't mind it. When I was an intern, they didn't let me do much of anything. Now I finally get interesting assignments."

Duela paused, unable to help it. She sat down before asking, "Your boss good looking?"

Dalia laughed a little. "He's not bad looking...but he's my boss. I mean, the Mayor of Gotham. I don't tend to think of him like that."

"Yes, well, that's smart, but there's no guarantee you'll keep thinking like that." Duela smirked, making it hard to tell how serious she was. "Workaholic with an equally dedicated superior, older male in a position of power... I see the potential for trouble."

Dalia blushed. Boy, Duela was in some sort of mood tonight. "...right."

Duela chuckled, taking a drink of her water before cutting into her chicken and taking a bite, as if this were a perfectly normal conversation to be having over dinner.

Crane reached out, placing one hand on top of Duela's. "I think Dalia's a bit uncomfortable being teased in front of me, my dear. If we wanted awkward conversation, I'd mention that his grandfather once beat me insensible. Not that I hold a grudge." The coldness that took over his smile once he turned it on Dalia said otherwise.

"Mayor Stephens' grandfather?" Dalia raised a brow. "I'm assuming you mean Jeffrey Stephens, the decorated police officer?" As a result of her job, she knew the mayor's biography probably in more detail than she knew her own.
