Oh how we've changed under the fading sun
how twilight left us dewy eyed and reborn
naive as we were, never expecting to see our shadows.
We left those stories far behind,
in nooks and crannies that only adults could reach
high up in the drawer.
Your whispers echoed mine,
and smiles hid behind our silken hands
where follies spilled forth and dreams brought down walls.
Now, the sun is at high noon,
aged shadows lengthen your face.
Your hands lay on mine,
cracked like the arching branches above our heads,
as we breathe with the wind and the leaves.
But we are them, and they are us.
Repeating our mistakes,
but learning new tricks.
We have the key to the fountain of youth,
a secret left in the cupboard.
Children know their way through life,
but the message gets lost along the way.
love keeps you afloat, and doesn't lead you through darkness.
Guiding you through the tangles and vines of the days,
your heart in my one hand, and your eyes held in mine
together we walk into the shadowless nights,
where moonshine lights our path,
and stars lead us home.
