Cookbook WTFery

On a recent trip to our favorite Japanese membership supermarket, Liam and I picked up a donburi cookbook off the rack in the store's little gifts/books/stationery section. For folks who don't do Japanese cooking, donburi technically means a covered bowl used for rice-based dishes but in everyday usage they are dishes of rice topped with some kind of Good and Tasty Stuff. Nice quick dinners or things to take and microwave at lunch. We thought that a lot of the recipes looked good and the book was about $17-18 so we got it. No big deal and when we got to the checkstand, the price was discounted by a couple of dollars--even better. When we started trying the recipes, they were darned good--win all around

That's the background for the WTF moment.

Last night Liam was telling a friend of his about the book. She doesn't get by the Japanese supermarket often so she looked it up on Amazon where it had a list price of ONE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN DOLLARS for a new copy. Used ones were only $28. Free shipping possible.

Where the hell did that price come from? As far as I know the book isn't out of print or autographed or in any way special...

I'm tempted to go back to the market and pick up another copy and sell it to Amazon for whatever they will give me.
