History: Not much is said about Tsukimiya Ayu's past before she meets Aizawa Yuuichi. She obviously had parents but the situation with her Dad is unknown; what we do know is that her mother has recently passed away. 9-10 year old Ayu bumps into Yuuichi while he is waiting for his cousin Minase Nayuki to finish the groceries. She's crying and when he asks her name she answers “Ayu” to both her first and last name. After this conversation Yuuichi drags Ayu away because people think he's bullying her (she is standing there in tears after all). He buys her taiyaki to cheer her up. In works. He later learns that Ayu was sobbing because her mother had just died. They agree to meet up every day on a particular bench and go out for taiyaki together, having become quick friends.

Yuuichi is only in town for a little while before he goes back to school in his hometown. But during the time they have together (once again, it's kept vague how long they're friends),Yuuichi and Ayu become very close. He gives her a little angel doll and tells her it'll grant three wishes as long as he can make them come true. Ayu wishes to spend lots of time with Yuuichi (it's a promise) and to go to school with him. Since they can't really go to school together (Yuuichi lives so far away), he decides that a large tree they often meet up around in the woods will be their “school”. They start meeting there a lot.
Lots of friend stuff fills this time period. As mentioned, they are very close, and it's assumed they have puppy-love crushes on each other. At some point Ayu must have met Nayuki's mother (Yuuichi's aunt) Aiko because she is able to recognize Ayu later in the series based on name and appearance.
Anywho. The big turning point in Ayu's past is one day when she's sitting on the branches of the school tree. On this exact day,Yuuichi has bought Ayu a cute red headband as a gift (good bye gift?I dunno.) When he arrives, a gust of wind and bad balance (though, please note that Ayu actually is very good at tree climbing) cause Ayu to fall off the tree. She hits her head very hard and begins bleeding a lot.Yuuichi is naturally panicked and wants to get help but Ayu wants him to stay with her. He sorta gives her the headband... This part is confusing. She sees it enough to promise to wear it the next time they meet, and yet, it's still unopened in the bag seven years later. Ayu then closes her eyes and Yuuichi cries a lot.
I have no idea what happens here, but Yuuichi basically assumes her dead and goes all sulky. And the adults do find Ayu. The tree she was on in labeled “DANGEROUS” and cut down to a very big tree stump and Ayu is taken to the hospital. It turns out she is just in a coma and Japan's amazing health care system will let her stay in the hospital for seven more years. Yuuichi somehow misses this memo. Heck, he's gonna give himself amnesia.

Anywho, seven years later, Yuuichi comes back. Now, to avoid headaches, I'll spoil this right away; Ayu's spirit is running around town. Because she promised Yuuichi to be with him and all that her spirit wanders town “in her dreams” and interacts with Yuuichi because he's back. However, she does not remember much about the past. She only seems to remember Yuuichi; the fact that she fell out of the tree and even that her mother is dead seem to be forgotten until the very end. She does know that she is looking for something (the angel doll) and she is wearing the headband.
She runs into Yuuichi again under similar circumstances; he's waiting for Nayuki to finish the groceries and then Ayu runs into Yuuichi.. A lot harder than last time, though. The fact that she tackles him becomes her trademark move. She's apparently stolen some Taiyaki and there's a big fuss over getting her to apologize and pay for it When they meet each other again she recognizes him as her childhood friend and Yuuichi accepts this, though doesn't remember the events from before. Neither does she.
They meet up a lot during the next few months and are BFF all over again. At one point Ayu wins tickets to a movie and takes Yuuichi on a “date” (though, horror movies and Ayu clearly don't mix and Yuuichi is no help). After Makoto vanishes Ayu comes over to the house one night and “remembers”that her parents are on vacation. Because the house feels so empty without Makoto, Aiko is quick to invite Ayu to stay with them. So she spends the rest of the series, up until she remembers, living with Yuuichi. During this time, she becomes friends with Nayuki.
As the series comes to an end,Ayu is still looking for her “important thing”. Yuuichi and her go on another date-ish thing and it endd with Ayu kissing him (he kisses her back) and they become a couple. Ayu takes Yuuichi to her school and they find that it's just a tree stomp. This is when things finally start adding up for Ayu. She opens her bag in hopes of finding school supplies but it's empty too. Her memories start coming back to her and she gets very desperate to find the wishing angel, digging at the ground with her bare hands. Yuuichi turns to help but when he looks back,Ayu has disappeared.
Insert some drama with emo!Yuuichi.
He goes back to the tree stomp and Ayu is there. She asks him to forget about her, because as far as she knows, she's dead (after all, it's not like she has the ability to know she's in a coma until she wakes up). He hugs her and tells her to stay but she tells him “I'm not a child anymore”, pretty much meaning that he has to move on from the past because they've both grown up. Yuuichi replies “yes you are. You're still a child.” and she disappears.
More emo Yuuichi.
Stuff about Nayuki's mom.
Oh, well, that is a bit important. Aiko is hit by a car. It's assumed that Ayu used up the miracle that kept her running around as a spirit to save Aiko.
While visiting the hospital, Nayuki sees a door labeled for “Tsukimiya Ayu”. She tells Yuuichi. There is much sorta-rejoicing. They take care of Ayu (hair washing, talking to her, trying to get her to wake up) because I guess her dad isn't around to do it himself. She wakes up. Her hair is chopped short. She is wheel chaired. Happy ending.
My Ayu will be coming from the point right after she disappeared for the second (and final) time, so she won't remember waking up from her coma. However, so that I don't have an emo Ayu running around at the end, her very last memory will be that she's not dead but in a coma.

Personality: Because she's been in a coma since she was 9,Ayu is very childish. She gets angry and frustrated and whines a lot. Childishly, of course. It's very rare that actual “I HATE YOU” anger comes from Ayu. She is the type to get pouty and give you the silent treatment and other childish little solutions to arguments, but she sometimes engage in actual back and forth verbal fights. Her immaturity also comes with a bit of pride. Ayu hates to be wrong, and will try to justify her mistakes with childish and messy logic-- her entire first entrance was based around her trying to be the victim, not the thief.
But don't get the idea that Ayu is all anger. She's a very nice girl who likes to help people almost as much as she likes to spend time with them. She's very friendly (she became friends with Makoto and Nayuki within minutes of meeting them) so is usually the first to start a friendship. However, she is also fairly good at respecting boundaries and taking the process of making friends slow (in the case of Makoto this is seen in her slight distance since Makoto was nervous).
She's an optimist with a kind spirit. Ayu is willing to make sacrifices for others (her miracle to save Akiko being an example of this). Ayu is also incredibly loyal and true to her word, this also making her a bit stubborn. This trait is the reason she was able to wander about as a spirit in the first place, to keep her promise to Yuuichi. Her stubbornness is seen mainly in interactions between her and her close friends but she respects her elders and higher ups (Akiko) and will bend her will if they ask.

Her kind spirit is seen quite a few times in the series. When interacting with Makoto, Ayu almost had a big sister touch to her care. Almost. She is too immature in many areas to truly be a big sister to anyone. She also tries very hard to make herself useful (cooking a surpriase thank you breakfast) and worries a lot about people (helping take care of Akiko when she was sick). Her attempts to be helpful often end clumsily (her cooking was terrible).
She's also very energetic. Her designers and writers noted that her energy was a key to her, and made writing her hard at times. She's a very bouncy and fun-loving girl, but in a childish sort of way. She's not a partying teenager, but will make a snowman family with you if you want (or if you don't want). Sometimes her energy is expressed in very weird ways; she tackle Yuuichi on some occasions when she sees him, for example.

For little neat personality traits, Ayu cannot cook. At all. Her attempts to make breakfast ended in plates of charcoal. She also has a 'catch phrase', “Uguu”. It is important to note when she says it though. It's the equivalent of “ugh” and should be used as “ugh”. She mainly says it when she's angry, frustrated, ashamed, disappointed, or, most often, after she's tackled someone and painfully hit the ground. It's not a happy sound and she rarely uses it as a question (as in to replace “what?” or “huh?”). She speaks using the masculine pronoun “boku”. Yuuichi had some fun teasing her about this.
She's also fairly polite but usually on a first name basis. Akiko was “Akiko-san” instead of “Minase-san”. Nayuki was treated in a friendly manner simply because she wanted to be close to Ayu from the start and Yuuichi was “Yuuichi-kun” because they were friends. However, in most cases, she'd use the honorific “san”.
Ayu also loves “taiyaki”, the sweet bean-paste filled fish pastry. It's a trademark of hers to eat (and steal) whole bags of it.
