....met with buyers from HEB, they've got 300 stores in texas, making them the largest, privately owned grocer in between the A and P oceans. i think they liked the looks of our facility, so i think they'll be buying our tofu soon. a good boost for a banyan foods that is doing its best to survive. so as my mom and i are hi-fiving each other...
they're opening a new store adjacent to new chinatown, their biggest store to date. that probably means local chinese grocers will be mowed down.
on the one hand, chinese grocers may benefit from this added competition, the strongest may survive, and adam smith may be right. on the other hand, they may be mowed down, by a nonasian grocer that knows, that to thrive in chinatown, you need asian faces, low prices, and live fish tanks. on the third hand, chinatown stores may benefit from the nonasians that are pulled into the area by the brand name of the HEB. maybe the trough is long enough for every sow to dip her snout. or maybe the new pork on the block is a gorilla.
yes, this worries me. my idiosyncracy with being born into this situation is that i don't have the accompanying blind eye to close.
