gary > i prefer this curved blade, it's easier to move and i don't have to go so deep.
mom > i've been using this straight blade, so i guess i'm used to it.
it's the first weekend i don't have to be in austin in about X weeks and my mom and i are at monticeto (a house name) separating tomatoes from their belly buttons.
the whole kitchen smells of chilis... jalapenos, cascabels, and the little red ones. i like the smell, but i sneeze alot. my mom has less tolerance for spicy foods, so the aroma burns her throat.
yesterday, we snapped stems off a box of chilis. i've never done this before, and enjoy the warmth between my knuckles. today, i'm pouring green and red tamale sauce into empty gallon bottles, pausing intermittently to run into the living room to sneeze. with our digital scale on the counter, the whole scene is kinda like a culinary meth lab, or what i hear meth labs to be like, via npr. for 4 weeks in september we plan a sale on tofu tamales in the whole foods hq in austin, so we're stockpiling.
so while assisting my mom in cooking sauce, karinita calls...
...
karinita >how's your mom?
gary > literally, a day ago, my mom found out her colon cancer was in remission.
karinita > wow, that's incredible.
gary > we were expecting a long drawn out battle too... i'm still in shock. she still has to complete her 5 remaining cycles of chemo. it's standard procedure to make sure nothing comes back, i guess.
... (karinita, highschool friend, is having her first son in september) ...
karinita > i just don't want my son to learn how to take advantage of women.
gary > from personal experience, if you raise him to be a momma's boy, you won't have ANY problems with that whatsoever.
karinita > HAA!
...
gary > do me a favor, if your son gets offered his first chance to spend the night at a friend's house, let him go!
karinita > hehe, actually i'm thinking of asking all my friends about childhood regrets that they had... stuff that parents should've let them do early in their lives. do you think you'd've been dramatically different had your mom let you go?
gary > no, hehehe. but i think that list of parenting missteps would make a great book.
...
gary > are you doing a special bathtub birth? or a midwife?
karinita > hehe, no the bathtub thing is weird... stuff floats out... before the baby comes.
gary > geezus, i didn't have to hear that, haha.
karinita > i'm actually trying hypno-assisted pregnancy. it helps to mitigate the pain.
