Day Off

So the original plan for today involved going to my brother's show, which is playing at the Spaghetti Warehouse on Spring Garden Street. However, at 3PM, I heard that it was cancelled. Ugh. I felt bad. I was really looking forward to going. Maybe next time. In lieu of going to a show, Freda and I went and got dirt. On State Road, there's free piles of dirt, and we wanted to get some for our recently completed brand new garden. We'll probably go back and get more tomorrow. We've got two of the four tiers filled with the new dirt, so maybe only two more trips for dirt.

It's been a while, but not a lot is really new. Working during the week, writing late into the night, working hard on the weekend as well. It was a pain in the ass, but the garden is done. I'll post a picture or two when I can. We also just got a new front door with storm door. Coming soon: New basement window, complete with jalocy, to open up and finally let some air in down here, where my computer is, where I write, where the "magic" happens.

Movies---who needs 'em? Well, I do, but I just can't get out to them as much anymore. I'm jonesing to see "Spiderman 3." I know a lot of people have been crapping on it but it still looks like it'll be awesome to me. I need to start renting again too. The Blockbuster across from the Orleans 8 movie theater recently closed, which sucks because that's one of the first Blockbusters to appear in NE Philly and, to me, used to be the end-all be-all of movie rental stores, due to the plethora of indie and hard-to-find movies it carried. I'm curious about checking out BB Online or even Netflix, but I don't know...something about just going out and perusing titles, picking what I'm in the mood for, something about that is still too appealing to me. Tops on my list of rentals: "Casino Royale," which, had we gotten to the theater an hour earlier, would've been my birthday movie.

I just rewatched "The Sting." Awesome movie. Also got through the DVD set of "Doctor Who: Series Two." Totally solid. David Tenant rocked as the Doctor. I heard that the third series, which is currently airing in the UK, will premiere on the Sci-Fi channel in July. Happiness surely awaits.

"American Doll Posse" by Tori Amos is pretty good. Some tracks feature her best work. I only wish she'd drop the whole concept-album thing she's been doing lately. I think it worked with "Scarlet's Walk" and was partly successful with "The Beekeeper," but I don't get what the deal is with this album, what the overall arc or mood is supposed to be.

The jury's still out to lunch on Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky." My first impressions have been rather lukewarm about it. Then again, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "A Ghost Is Born" both left me cold at first, but eventually grew on me, so we'll see what happens here.

Writing-wise, I'm nearing the end of that novel I'm writing that might not see the light of day for quiet some time. It's a behemoth of a story, or at least a behemoth compared to what I've written in the past. Basically, it's split up like this: Prologue, Part I, Part II, Part III, and Epilogue. Right now, I'm finishing up Part II (Prologue & Part I are written, Part III is partially written, and Epilogue should be but a few pages). Part II alone is about 20 pages shy of the length of "Under the Bridge" in its double-spaced standard page format. So this is shaping up to be pretty lengthy, but strong writing, I feel.

Next, I want to focus on a new novel entitiled "Rosemary and Time," which is a reworking of a screenplay I wrote in 2003-2004, which some may remember as "Is This It." It's recently come back into my consciousness and I really think I could do more with it. Those who read the screenplay all commended it while pointing to one or two areas that could be improved. I have ideas on how to improve them. The novel should end up being 70% of the final draft I completed and 30% new material (mostly in the end).

At some point, I hope to get back to "The World I Know" and "In Between Days." In fact, two weeks ago, I had an early-morning inspiration for a scene I'd planned for IBD and I wrote out the dialogue for it. Maybe after "Rosemary and Time," I'll get back to IBD.

Another project on the horizon: my 2nd short story collection. It'll combine new edits of stories originally from "Second Reality," stories from my website, and new, never-before-published-in-any-form stories. I'll probably put them up as cheapest-thing-possible. Lulu has an option where it can be downloaded for a dollar, so I might make it an all-download thing. Or...hell, I don't know. I'll wait and see on that one.

And that about wraps it up for this long-delayed edition of my narcissicism put into words.

I don't know what that means...
