Well, since you're obsessed with something/someone, you know and understand a lot of things about them. Therefore, you take on some of the qualities either consciously or subconsciously and slowly become them somehow.
It's like, when you're with someone, for example, some of the characteristics you like about them rub off on you. Like if you like their responsibility, you might have a drive to be more responsible.
I haven't seen a live example of this entirely, but that's what the term entails.
See I'd agree. The only thing is, you can be obsessed with things and people you know nothing about. So in my opinion that statement renders the previous disposition moot.
Unless you can think about it this way -- you become obsessed and immersed in your ideal about that person you don't know. In that sense, you make up what you think that person is like and become obsessed that way.
Once you become obsessed with something/someone, you end up becoming them.
