I recently found the notebook I was using back when I began this challenge oh so long ago, and in it I found a few unfinished fics/drabbles that I decided to finish up real quick. The following are the fruits of those labors. Hopefully my writing will get better as I attempt to actually finish the fanfic100.
Title: Sleepless Nights
Fandom: Veronica Mars
Characters: Mac, Cassidy
Prompt: #25 Strangers
Word Count: 332
Rating: PG
Summary: She never knew him.
Author's Notes: Spoilers up to 2.22 Not Pictured (kind of 3.01 as well)
It’s funny, the things she misses about him. She knows she shouldn’t, after everything he’s done, but she can’t help it. During the day she can usually keep her thoughts under control, but at night, they wander. It’s midnight and she can’t sleep.
It’s been twenty-seven days, two hours and thirty-one, no thirty-two minutes since she walked out of the bathroom and her world came tumbling down. She finds herself looking at the phone, wanting so desperately to dial the still familiar number and hear his voice. Just one more time - that’s all.
She knows she shouldn’t entertain those thoughts, not after finding out everything that happened, but she wants some sort of closure; to know that Cassidy didn’t do those things. It’s fruitless but every night it’s the same song and dance.
It’s really the small things that she misses. Their nightly phone calls. Neither would say much, they were simply content in hearing the other breathe. The look he would give her in the halls and even when they were alone. It was as though he saw past her façade and saw who she truly was.
It’s also that thought that scares her. He saw her for her, raw and exposed, but she never truly saw him for him, she couldn’t see past his façade. Sure, in retrospect there were small glimpses - not going further than the occasional make-out session, the way he defended her against Dick. It didn’t seem to mean much at the time, but looking back, maybe that was the neon blinking sign pointing out that her boyfriend was a homicidal suicidal lunitac.
Her doctors all tell her that there was no way to know and that she needs to move on but she’s not buying it. How do you move on from something like that? To live with knowing that the one person you loved in your short life, you never really knew?
He was a stranger to her but he knew every inch of her.
Title: Complicated
Fandom: Veronica Mars
Characters: Mac, Cassidy
Prompt: #85 She
Word Count: 200
Rating: PG
Summary: A meaningful beginning. Cassidys thoughts on Mac after asking for help in 2.09.
Author's Notes: General spoilers for season 2.
“A means to an end, that’s all she is,” he repeated in his head. It’s became his mantra lately. “Simply an exchange of services. She knows design, I don’t - pay her and it’s done.” But it wasn’t quite that simple, it could never be that easy.
He had gotten her name from a few people, including Veronica. It should have been no big deal, he would tell her what he needs done, she would do it, he would pay her. Bing, bang, bam, done.
It didn’t happen that way. Everything changed when he saw her in the computer lab. Sure, he had noticed her before - who could miss the blue hair? But that day in the computer lab, the look of contentment on her face as she worked (or played?) while listening to music, she looked genuinely happy. That’s something he hasn’t felt in a long time.
It was that moment when everything changed for him. Maybe this wasn’t a means to an end but a meaningful beginning. She could be his salvation, especially if she shared the secret to her bliss. Maybe he could be normal again and everything he’s done wasn’t in vain. Only she could never know.
