Holmes/Watson recs

A handful of Holmes/Watson recs, in case anyone is interested. I can't even remember all of the great fics I've read over the last week or so, but here are a few:

Infinite Variations Upon a Single Moment by lisztful (PG) - Transgender!Holmes fic. Holmes presents a case of a very personal nature for Watson to ponder.A seriously beautiful story! I was ( Read more... )

And this, my friend, is why I love you. Seriously. This is exactly what I needed to procrastinate from looking at universities. Thank you.

OMG, have you seen the movie? Or are you a fan of the books? WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS IMMEDIATELY.

Only the movie, sorry. IS THIS IMMEDIATE ENOUGH FOR YOU?

That's okay, I've only seen the movie too, although I am reading the stories right now. AND YES THIS IS FINE. Wasn't the slash beautiful? ♥

Should I read the stories? The slash was indeed beautiful. Even more so because you just know there'll be RPS as well...as in, RDJ referred to Jude Law as "Hotson" - the Hot Watson. I could not love that man more.

(I was just about to bemoan the fact that I have no relevant icons, but I realized that I have at least one RDJ icon...though when and where I got it, I have no idea.)

Oh yeah, I love the "Hotson" thing! Heh. I haven't read any RPS yet but I'm totally open to it and in fact yearning for some, now that you mention it. I nominate you, who is already an expert at this RPS business, to go find me some and send me rec links!

(Yes, you need icons! And communities! Okay, let's see. Join holmeswatson09, obviously, and maybe sherlock2009, newbakerstreet, sherlockkink, and holmes_big_bang. If you need the names of some SH icon makers, you can check my userpics because I have several uploaded. Or just check the comms, obviously.)

Also, I'm going to bed now, but I'll talk to you later. I'm glad you're back!

Wait, wait, wait...you're nominating the person who a) has never been all that good at finding fic in the first place and b) who has been away from the internet for a while to find you fic? Poor choice, my friend, poor choice. But I'll see what I can do.

(Oh my goodness. I totally need another fandom, of course.)

Hey, just as a side note to...nothing, can you read this article and tell me what you think? I recently discovered this website, and I get what it's trying to be, but for me it's just...not well-written, and a lot of the arguments make me want to hit someone or something. I get angry every time I read one, and I'm not sure if I'm just overreacting, or if it's a valid feeling. So: http://www.heartlessdoll.com/2008/07/top_10_80s_movie_moments_we_once_loved_but_now_see.php

I will respond to your e-mail sometime today, I promise!

Hey, come on, I can't do all the dirty work here. PULL YOUR WEIGHT ELENA.

(And yes, in this case, you do.)

Hmm, interesting article. I agree with some of those points and have myself cringed at a lot of those moments upon rewatching (most of them from Sixteen Candles), but I disagree with a few. I don't think Brian wrote the essay because he was the nerd they could rely on to do their homework while everyone else went to hook up; I think he did it because, of everyone, he was the one who could best put everything they were feeling into words. As for Allison...I've always been kind of torn on this one. I don't think Andy kissed her because suddenly she was pretty, and I always get frustrated by this comment because I think it's clear that he was into her before, and we've had this conversation before so you know what I mean. Whether or not she should have had the makeover is a different point, and I see the controversy there, but I don't think in her case that it's as simple as most people make it out to be. I think part of it is the ( ... )

I'll start looking, okay. Don't yell, geez.

My thoughts are similiar to yours. What first attracted me to the article was the fact that there are a lot of moments in 80s movies that are, in retrospect, fairly cringe-worthy, I just don't think the article did a very good job at finding them, nor was the analysis particularly well thought-out.

For instance, with Brian - I agree with you. He doesn't begrudge the fact that he has to write the article, and I actually think it's a sign of how close they've become that he can be the voice for all five of them. With Allison - agreed again. Their relationship develops; it's not as thought he is entirely uninterested in her, but only takes notice when she's been made over. (I think the most obvious movie example where that does happen - and where it does bug me - is Grease, because he only actually gives into his feelings for her when she's been made all hot.) Like you, I appreciate the Claire/Allison interaction, and I also think that you can't assume Allison will stay that way after ( ... )

Yes, I am inclined to agree that the writer didn't do a very good job of finding the cringeworthy moments in these films, particularly in the TBC. I think there are other disturbing moments that they could have pulled from, like maybe Vernon's treatment of Bender (the fact that he locks him in a closet for the day and then threatens him, wtf) or even Brian bringing a gun to school and getting detention for it without anyone looking into it any deeper. Because if you understand the movie - you know, the way we do, clearly - then the things she mentioned feel like easy answers when you're just looking for something to be angry about.

you can't assume Allison will stay that way after Saturday - Exactly! There are so many ways it could go, which is why Monday is always an interesting question.

Also, there's a lot that bothers me about Grease. A lot. I think I could devote an entire article to that movie alone. I have never understood why it is so popular, to be honest.

I think that the whole set-up where the girl falls for the popular ( ... )

Yes! Exactly what bothered me about the TBC stuff. I just feel like...I don't know, there are other things to comment on. Clearly we have both spent literally hours of our lives devoted to that damn movie, so I'd like to think we understand it better than her.

Talk to me about Grease! I find the songs catchy, but that is definitely one of those films that bothers me a lot more in retrospect than it did upon first viewing.

Duckie's adorable; most best friend characters pining after the lead are. I felt bad for him, don't get me wrong, but I also appreciate the fact that Hughes let there be some reality in that. I mean, yeah, sometimes the adorable best friend gets left on the sidelines. Why the hell is that "disturbing"?

I don't know, I think that there are a lot of sites that do lists like that really, really well - they manage to be funny and analytical, and make me think a bit harder about things. I appreciate that.

It assumes that boys are sex-driven and can't feel anything genuine for a girl, which is sexist and dehumanizing ( ... )

Ah man, it's been so long since I've seen Grease that I couldn't articulate it properly. Mostly the sexism, and Danny and Sandy's relationship in general. He doesn't seem to actually care for her, just wants to grope her. Trying to have sex with her in the car at the movies (even after she says no and tries to push him off) and just the way he generally acts like a massive jerk throughout the entire film. If I'm remembering correctly, he ignores her in front of his friends when he's embarrassed, or tries to play off his feelings for her by making it about sex? See, I can't remember. And then, like you said, when she gets her hot makeover at the end, suddenly he's all over her again. But anyway, I find some of the music fun and catchy as well, despite not being much of a fan of musicals.

I love Lloyd too. I really need to watch Say Anything again soon. It's one of my favorite movies. Heh, what's the quote about his friend?

Lloyd: "She's written 65 songs about you. They're all about pain."
Joe: "So what's up?"

Yeah, basically Danny kind of ignores her and embellishes things to his friends (from pretty much the first song, I'm pretty sure) and then...god, it drives me crazy, the entire last sequence. I mean, he does join the track team for her, or something, right? But I don't think it lasts, and ultimately, the concession is hers to his lifestyle, and not the other way around.

Oh, Lloyd. I actually think his friend in that film is one of my favourite characters ever. She never fails to crack me up. I think Lloyd also said something about her, like "if you start out depressed, then everything else is just a pleasant surprise".

Right right, I remember the track team thing now. Doesn't it have something to do with him being jealous of the guy she's dating? See, I would watch it again to figure these things out, but, well.

Yes! One of my all-time favorite quotes. "You've got it all figured out, Corey. If you start out depressed, everything's kind of a pleasant surprise." She is hilarious.

Probably. And man, I was all mad at that girl for not doing her research, and now we cannot even be bothered to fact-check. I am shaking my head in shame right now, let it be known.

See, I think I've pretty much been quoting that at people as my life motto for the past few years, but it only really just hit me where it came from. Love that actress. I wonder if she's been in anything recently...

It's Lily Taylor, and it looks like she has! It looks like she was in High Fidelity with John Cusack. I also like that movie Dog Fight with River Phoenix, which is also sexist, definitely, but it's the time period and the film seems to be aware of the fact. That's one I haven't seen in years either, but I need to rewatch it. I went through a River Phoenix phase back in the day.

It's my life motto too! Meaning of course that it is on my facebook profile.

Well, I'm not going to rewatch Grease because I hate it! Although, if we both watched it for research/discussion purposes, I could suffer through...
