Were the deathly hallows even that important in this book? All that happened was that Harry decided to not go find them. That's about all they did...

That's the thing. They were "important". The Book was named for them. They all contributed (barely) to Harry's survival. But, really, the only "vital" one was the wand, and even then, it didn't need to be a special wand, as what mattered was the transfer of ownership. The cloak and Stone could have remained pointless, as the return of the figures from death really served no purpose other than giving him courage, which, as a gryffindor, he should have already had. In actuality, it seems like some extra thing added in unnecessarily. What with the quest already for the Horcruxes, this just seemed like too many magical objects floating around and turning up randomly.

I feel like Harry's eyes being like Lily's was precisely what made the line "Look... at...me...." have multiple layers of meaning.

I think what James and Lily did for a living was important in that they were Aurors, which made them candidates for Voldemort to hunt them down.

The part about someone performing magic later in life I would assume is either Ariana or Dudley (magic as in more of an abstract sense). Also, JKR could have cut this out in later revisions, but maybe Filch in the Hogwarts battle?

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the big revelation about Lily is actually about Snape. Can't think of any way outta that one. :P
