Today, a stray kitten was hit by a car at the Court Street intersection. The kitten couldn't have been more than a couple of months old. I believe it is one of the kittens the very affectionate stray cat recently had. (I've been feeding the cat, and installed a pet door in the garage, so she had a safe place to stay with her kittens.) So, I had to scoop up the remains of the kitten, and buried it in the back yard. I made a headstone out of a piece of slate and a Dremel tool... it's very sad to see something so young die such a violent death... it inspired these thoughts:
The radiant sun, a beacon of life beaming down from above,
Brilliant yellow eyes exploring the Earth with trepedation,
The path strewn with clouds; obstacles and dangers unforeseen...
The cement burns the tender flesh, the summer grass tickles the face
The innocence of youth, as bright as the sky.
The air dense with the perfume of dogwood and charcoal,
With the symphony of birds and childrens' laughter.
Slowly moving forward in careful, measured steps...
Arching gracefully across the field spotted with tufts,
Ever steady moving westward, the sunset impending.
Carefully lowering to the street, and beyond the skyline...
and then, there is sudden
darkness.
The night is still and quiet....the sky is dark and cold,
a lifeless body hanging in the mists,
the birds silent, the children asleep,
the air dense with a chill. The soft wafting of incense...
And gone is the innocent. Forever asleep.
