Chapter 4
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!”
Sungmin shot out of bed, screaming his lungs out. He clutched his blankets closer as he frantically looked around him but he didn’t see anybody there. The bed he was on with the thin sheets and hard pillow told him that he was still in the clinic at school, and it was already dark outside. He should probably be getting home soon, but he couldn’t make himself move from his position. He sat frozen as he kept his eyes glued to the tree branch he’d seen his almost-rapist perch on, afraid that it wasn’t just a dream and he’d see the man there again. But the man didn’t come, and soon Sungmin’s breaths evened out.
‘It was just a dream,’ he told himself, ‘a silly dream.’
He shook his head ruefully to get the image of the man out of his head and tossed the blankets aside. No one was in the school anymore, except maybe the nurse, who would ask him tons of questions, he had to get away from that. He tugged his shoes on and shot another look over his shoulder at the hanging tree branch, still no man. Good.
He scrambled out of the room without looking back. If he had, he would have seen the deep scratch marks on his headboard and the scattered speckles of blood on the floor and on his blankets, but he didn’t look back, and he would never have to know.
===============
Kyuhyun had to wait till the sun had set before he ventured out of the forest. He felt jumpy and he started up at any sound he heard, even when he knew that because of his enhanced hearing, those sounds were probably far far away there was nobody outside and he was incredibly thankful for that, he still hadn’t forgotten that the last human being he saw had almost been killed because of him.
He winced.
He checked his backpack and fished out the plastic bag he’d nicked from the fridge before he ran out. Type AB, the neat writing on the bag said. He wanted to make sure that he’d be absolutely full before he met with any human life. He didn’t want to take the life way after all. Unfortunately, the bag he’d grabbed was only half full and he’d already drank half of that on his way out of the forest. He didn’t know how long it would last him, but he decided that he’d just drink the other half after he’s seen Sungmin, to fight off the urges.
Kyuhyun wasn’t sure if his plan would work though, and he eyes the bag with a troubled mind.
Was he doing the right thing?
What if he ended up killing Sungmin?
Kyuhyun shook his head stubbornly, no, he wasn’t going to let that happen. His plan would work, as all his plans always do.
He took one last sip and took off.
Sungminnie, here I come.
===============
“What are you doing here?”
Onew grinned. Kibum was pacing in restlessly in the empty classroom they were in and he looked so much
like a teacher that he couldn’t help but find humor in the situation.
“Why do you sound so scandalized?”
Kibum huffed, and folded his arms.
“I tell you that the Kim Ryeowook is around, and no doubt his posse is here with him and then you come right towards the danger. Pabo.”
Onew grimaced. “Zhou Mi told me to come. What else was I supposed to do?!”
“Okay, now I understand why you’re here.” Kibum said, massaging his temples. “But why, Onew. Why’d you have to bring them?!” he pointed at the three men standing behind Onew. Jonghyun waved.
“I didn’t bring them!” Onew protested, he pointed an accusing finger at the smiling bunch.
Taemin snickered. “Calm down, Kibum. He did try to get us to stay behind, but we followed him.”
“And you didn’t mind the danger?! If you die what do you think Zhou Mi would feel?” Kibum waved his hands frantically above his head as he paced.
“We’re not going to die.” Minho said, stepping out and restraining Kibum’s arms. “It’s just one man we’re talking about here. One.”
Kibum’s eyes flashed and he pushed Minho away. “You don’t understand because you weren’t here when
Zhou Mi was still alone.” He turned to Onew. “Don’t you remember how depressed Zhou Mi was when you were new?”
“I do, Kibum, and we’re not going to let him fall into depression like that again.” Onew said, taking Minho’s place and placing both of his hands on Kibum’s shoulders. “Okay?”
Kibum huffed.
“And you start protecting Zhou Mi’s feelings by bringing the vampires he considers his children right to the scene of danger. Very smart Onew.”
“I already said I didn’t bring them! They followed.” Onew said with a glare.
“Fine, fine.” Kibum said, giving in and dropping down to a nearby armchair, “Just tell me what you want to know so that you can leave already.”
Onew sat down on the teachers table as Taemin cuddled close to him. Onew didn’t seem to mind.
“Zhou Mi wants to know all about Ryeowook. Where you saw him and when.” Onew said as he played with
Taemin’s hair absentmindedly.
“At the school gates, this morning.”
“At the school gates?” Taemin repeated with wide eyes. “You mean those school gates?” he pointed out the window overlooking the school grounds and everyone turned to look.
“Yes.”
The fact that Ryeowook had been standing so close just a few hours ago hit everyone and the mischievous glint in Jonghyun and Minho’s eyes disappeared as fear overtook them.
“He was with Sungmin.” Kibum added.
Onew’s head whipped around. “Sungmin again? Why was he with Ryeowook?!”
Kibum shrugged. “I have no idea. But they seemed close.”
“Aish.” Onew cursed as he realized something and he dropped his head and brought up both of his hands to
cover his eyes. Taemin looked up at him in concern, “Kyuhyun ran away from Zhou Mi just now.” his voice was muffled by his hands.
“What?!” Kibum exclaimed, shooting up from his chair, eyes wide in panic. “If he ran away he might be going to Sungmin.”
“If Ryeowook is with Sungmin when Kyuhyun finds him,,,” Jonghyun continued the train of thought with a grave face.
Taemin stood up, looking out the window and at the dying sun with his hands wrapped around Onew’s as he shook in fear.
“This Kyuhyun person, he’s going to get killed, isn’t he?”
===============
In a rundown nightclub at the outskirts of town, a man crawled around on his hands and knees. Nobody in the club paid any attention to him, they were already quite used to the resident singer’s weird antics.
“Ddangkoma! Ddangkoma!” the man on his knees called. “Where are you?”
“What are you doing?” Ryeowook asked once he saw the crawling man, both perplexed and amused.
The man looked up at him with watery eyes and pouted.
“I can’t find Ddangkoma, Wookie! He was just here, and then he was gone!”
‘Wookie’ smiled fondly. “You left him on top of the refrigerator, Sungie. He’s been there for an hour already.”
Sungie’s already wide eyes widened even more. “For an hour?! Why did I put him up there?” He got on his feet and rushed towards the kitchen as fast as his short legs could take him. Ryeowook giggled.
“Why is he so adorable?” he muttered to himself as he hung up his coat on the battered looking hatstand by the door.
“Yo, Ryeowook.” a man with a gravelly voice called out to him and Ryeowook turned around to find his boss towering over him, smoking yet another cigar. He felt his heart sink in dread.
“Yes, Boss?”
“You’ve got a customer down at room 6. Requested you specifically. You’ve become famous eh boy?” the boss said lifting an eyebrow. “What exactly do you do with them that’s so special?”
Ryeowook blushed under his boss’ scrutinizing eyes.
“I don’t know, sir. I just do my job.” Ryeowook mumbled, hoping to get his boss away from him before he had to resort to other methods.
The man half-smiled, half-smirked up at him. He grabbed Ryeowook’s face with one hand and lifted his face up till it was only inches away from him.
“Well, well, you’re prettier than I first thought you were.”
Ryeowook fought off the urge to wince as the horrible smell of nicotine assaulted his nose. The boss would be greatly insulted if he did that and there’d be a less chance of him getting away easily.
“Maybe one night I’d rent you myself.” the boss growled in a failed attempt to be seductive.
“B-but sir, the customer…” Ryeowook stuttered as he felt the other hand that wasn’t gripping his face slap his butt. He flushed even redder, but thankfully, his boss released him at that instant.
“Oh, of course. The customer must be waiting. Go get dressed, he says he prefers the bunny costume.”
Ryeowook blanched, but at least his boss had turned around before he did so the man didn’t see his reaction to the bunny costume. If there was anything he hated about his job, it was the outfit. He hurried off to the dressing room and pulled off his clothes. The bunny costume had already been assembled by somebody else, probably Shindong who liked to help them out a lot. It consisted of a white headband with pink bunny
ears, a whip and other such items that he didn’t even want to think about, he just pulled all of them on.
Aish, this customer is so going to pay for this embarrassment.
He checked himself all over on the huge mirror propped against the wall and decided that yes, he did look bunny-like enough to meet the customer. And sexy, never forget sexy. He huffed, how he hated this job.
Information, he thought in his head, I just need the information, and then I’m out.
“Wookie! The customer’s getting impatient!” Yesung called, popping his head in the room, and promptly dropping all the food he was holding. Ryeowook blushed.
“Woah, Wookie.” was all that Yesung managed to sputter out.
“Did you find Ddangkoma?” Ryeowook asked quickly, hoping to distract Yesung from what he was seeing. But Yesung wasn’t easily distracted. Especially not from this.
“Don’t go to the customer, Wookie.” Yesung says huskily as he slides into the room. “Stay with me.”
“You know I can’t, Sungie.” Ryeowook says even as he feels his knees already going weak under him.
Yesung takes another step forward.
“Sungie, listen.” Ryeowook says, walking past Yesung and right to the door before the other man could pull him back, or before he gives in and jumps into the other mans arms. “If you don’t burst into the customer’s room like you did last time, this weekend will be yours.” Ryeowook opens the door and steps out as Yesung’s darkly-lined eyes burn into him. “Only yours.”
And then he closes the door and breathes out a sigh of relief.
He knew Yesung’s been deprived lately, but this wasn’t the time for that.
Ryeowook looked around, hoping that nobody had seen him yet in the costume that he was in. It tended to attract more customers if somebody’s seen him like this. But his luck had run out and some men standing by the bar were hooting at him and one was even starting to walk in his direction, eyes locked on his bunny-clad form.
Ryeowook gulped. Steeled himself for a moment, and then made a run for room number six. The door was unlocked, thankfully, and Ryeowook ran right in and slammed the door behind him.
“There you are!” cried a familiar voice, and he was instantly enveloped in a tight hug.
“Y-yunho.” Ryeowook greeted.
So Yunho was the customer. Again. How useless. He practically came here every night ever since his boyfriend had disappeared and Ryeowook had practically sucked all of this guy’s information dry. He’d gotten the other drunk and asked him so many questions.
“Why do you always drink, Yunho?”
“Ever since he disappeared there’s been nothing else to do.”
“But why do you always ask for me?”
Yunho’s eyes bored into his.
“You look just like him, Wook.”
Ryeowook shivered. He didn’t like this one bit. He wasn’t just a replacement for somebody else. He was never going to accept that.
And before he could do anything about it, Yunho was crushing his lips against Ryeowook’s and Ryeowook couldn’t breathe. Yunho was heavy, and the door was hard. There was only one thing that Ryeowook could do. He felt his energy pooling at the palm of his hand and he drew it out, forming a tiny spark in his hands and he brought it against Yunho’s cheek, causing the taller man to cry out.
“Aish.” Yunho cursed, rubbing the spot. “What was that?!” He glared at Ryeowook with angry eyes. “Did you just slap me?!”
Ryeowook smirked, pulling on his power once again and wrapping it around his voice. “No.” he whispered In melodic tones. “I didn’t slap you. We made out and you had the greatest sex you’ve ever had against that door.” He winced a bit, he never liked the part where he had to describe exactly what the customer was supposed to be doing, it was uncomfortable to talk dirty. It was good that Yesung had found a way to generalize it all so he didn’t have to describe every single detail anymore.
Yunho’s eyes took on a far away look and he broke into a dreamy smile. Ryeowook didn’t even want to think about what Yunho was probably going through at that moment. It was uncomfortable.
Ryeowook walked over to the pink bed and collapsed on it, taking out the earplugs he always kept in his pocket and pulling them on. He didn’t want to hear it when Yunho began moaning, he’d learnt his lesson from the first time he’d tried this.
Shiver. Shiver.
No. Bad thoughts. Go away.
He shook his head and began to think of Sungmin instead. Poor boy had been shaking all over when he’d brought him home. Ryeowook hoped that convincing Sungmin to return to school had been the right decision.
Sigh.
Maybe he’d go visit Sungmin at the other man’s apartment later.
It would help his peace of mind.
===============
Kyuhyun was almost there.
The apartment was just visible. But that wasn’t really saying anything because his vision was a hundred times sharper than normal. But it was still considered close to a vampire. Kyuhyun kept on stopping along the way, his eyes never leaving the window that opened up to the room that Sungmin occupied. The lights were off, so he wasn’t entirely sure if Sungmin was in there or not but he was sure that when he was close enough he’d be able to smell if there was anybody in there.
Through the scent of Sungmin’s blood.
Kyuhyun skidded to a stop, and instantly regretted it.
The scent of blood of the hundreds of city inhabitants was only barely-there when he was in motion but the moment he stopped, it surrounded him, suffocated him and he felt his incisors begin to lengthen.
No.
He took off running once again, eyes watering up even as his throat began to burn in thirst.
No.
He swung off his backpack and fumbled in it desperately as he ran. He could already feel himself losing his coherency. He needed blood and he needed blood now. He pulled the half-empty pack of blood and began sucking off the open end. Blood trickled down to his chin as he greedily suckled on the bag. The blood was cold and it was severely lacking in flavor, but Kyuhyun still stopped running and closed his eyes in complete ecstasy at the taste that soothed the burning in his throat, but only just.
His thirst wasn’t even halfway sated when suddenly, there wasn’t any more blood in the bag to drink, no matter how much he tipped it back and slurped at it. He was thirsty, there was no more blood and the scent of a thousand city occupants was suffocating him once again as he stood in a street corner with his eyes shut
and with blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.
“Kyuhyun-ah?!”
Kyuhyun didn’t know how the human had managed to get so close to him without him hearing it. He didn’t know how the human knew his name or why he did. But what he did know, was that at that moment that he heard his name, a whiff of a food source that was just meters away hit him and all of his coherency disappeared.
His fangs lengthened.
===============
The session with Yunho had lasted longer than he thought it would. Not that he necessarily had to do anything, but waking up next to your client made things all the more believable; and that was exactly what he did.
A few compliments from Yunho and failed passes by Yesung later, Ryeowook was zooming through the streets of the town in the direction of Sungmin’s apartment, driving as fast as he could as he tried to shake off the voice in his head that kept repeating the last words that Yunho had said to him before Ryeowook had practically run out he door in embarrassment.
“I never knew that you were so flexible.”
Ewww.
Ryeowook bit his lip, hopefully, his visit to the very innocent Sungmin would solve his problems. The boy just radiated with innocence and butterflies.
Sigh.
Ryeowook had once been like that too, but, things change.
People die.
Ryeowook’s eyes darkened.
No, he didn’t want to think about things like this on his night off. This was supposed to be a happy night to be
spent with his newfound friend who had been ecstatic to hear that he’d be coming over. This night was Sungmin’s.
With that happy thought in his mind, Ryeowook revved the motorcycle and sped up, a small smile on his face.
And then a shrill scream pierced the night.
===============
It was all about the blood.
The taste of it, the scent of it, the way it slid down his throat, and soothed his aching need and brought strength to his very being. It was the blood.
It didn’t matter that the man he was feeding off was scrabbling off his back desperately as he tried to call out for help. It didn’t matter that this man was probably someone he knew and he’d regret this later. The blood called out to him. It filled his very being and clouded his mind as he greedily sucked off from the man’s milky white neck.
Kyuhyun’s eyes rolled back into their sockets in pleasure.
It was the blood.
===============
“Did you find him yet?”
Onew gripped the phone tightly as he kept his patrol on the north side of town. Kibum sat beside him, gun in hand but not really doing anything as Onew’s eyesight was far better than his. Onew had his phone on speaker.
“No. He isn’t near Sungmin’s apartment.” Minho answered as Jonghyun hummed in the background.
“Not here either!” Taemin chirped.
“Then what was that deafening scream we just heard?” Onew asked, a tad apprehensively.
“Probably just some guy being mugged somewhere.” MInho said nonchalantly.
“I’m hungry.” Jonghyun whined.
“We don’t care if you’re hungry Jonghyun.” Onew spat into his phone, his eyes busy scanning the empty horizon.
“You’d care if it was your Kibum I was going to feed off.” Jonghyun scoffed.
Kibum looked startled at those words and the blood drained out of his face: “I’m suddenly glad that I’m at the opposite side of you.” he said.
“Feed off this Kibum and I’m killing off yours.” Onew growled.
“Chill man, I was just kidding” Jonghyun cried out.
“Guys?”
“I don’t find it funny when it’s my life you’re talking about.” Kibum yelled.
“Guys…”
“I said I was kidding!” his voice was bordering on hysterical now.
“GUYS!!!”
“Yes, Taemin?” Onew sighed, massaging his temples.
“Does Ryeowook own a motorcycle?”
“Yes.” Minho replied.
“Is he feminine….ish?”
“You can say that.” Kibum said after a few seconds of deliberation.
“Does he normally carry a gun around?”
“Maybe.” Jonghyun said.
“Omo!”
“What?” Onew asked suddenly alarmed.
“There‘s this guy on a motorcycle with a gun in hand headed in this direction. And he‘s coming fast.”
Kibum and Onew exchanged frightened glances. One word in both of their minds.
Shit.
===============
Ryeowook’s vampire sensors were tingling. The air seemed different, heavier somehow, and he could feel some power not that different from his not too far away. Something wasn’t right.
He continued pushing his motorcycle forward, gun at the ready, as he followed the dark oppressive energy in the atmosphere. Someone had been attacked, that he was sure of. Maybe he’d be too late to save the person but the vampire who’d done it could still be dispatched, and that was what he was aiming for.
He could feel the air getting heavier as he drove closer to Sungmin’s apartment and his heart began to sink. Why was it that trouble seemed to find Sungmin everywhere? The other man was perfectly innocent of everything evil around him, but it seemed that the world was hell-bent on destroying this innocence.
Ryeowook wasn’t about to let that happen.
But the world seemed to be against him as the heaviness in the air slowly began to choke him as he approached his newfound friend’s place. That only meant that there were many of them, he wasn‘t sure how many they were or where they were all located, but he knew one thing for sure, they were all surrounding Sungmin’s apartment. Was Sungmin their target?
Ryeowook cocked his gun, skidded his motorcycle to a stop and clambered off. He wasn’t about to let anyone touch Sungmin’s innocence.
He stalked forward, eyes searching and vampire sensors tingling and then suddenly, from around the corner came a shout of pain.
Ryeowook ran towards the sound as fast as he could, gun at the ready, and the moment he rounded the corner, he fired.
A fatal hit.
===============
Onew carried Kibum bridal style as he ran as quickly as he could down the stairs. They had to get away and they all had to get away fast. Kibum had protested being carried in such a fashion but Onew didn’t give a damn about what Kibum did or didn’t like. All of those things didn’t matter when you were already dead. Soon, Onew saw the fire exit and he doubled his speed, and soon they were out into the night.
Out, but not necessarily safe.
Onew sniffed the air warily and then blanched, Kibum’s scent overpowered everything else and he couldn’t smell anything aside from Kibum. His arms slackened.
“Owww!” Kibum cried in pain as his body collided with the ground.
Onew only shook his head, trying to get Kibum’s scent out of his system.
“I’m sorry.” he mumbled out.
Then a gunshot ripped through the streets.
===============
Kyuhyun greedily lapped up the blood still oozing from the shallow would he’d made on the mans shoulder. The blood was deliciously warm and he wanted more of it, more, and more and more. Even when he felt
bloated already, the blood was still oozing, so Kyuhyun was still going to drink.
He dipped his head for more.
And then a gunshot ripped though the air.
Kyuhyun snapped out of his blood craze, his eyes returning to normal, his incisors shrinking back to normal size and his conscience once again turning on in his head.
What have I done?!
Kyuhyun could feel the blood on him, in between his fingernails and dripping from his chin, encrusting on his shirt and spilling into the pavement.
What have I done?
He lifted his hands shakily and found them stained in red.
What have I done?
Kyuhyun felt like vomiting.
“K-K-Kyu….”
That voice. Kyuhyun knew that voice. Oh my god. That voice.
“K-Kyu…hyun…”
And then a pale weak hand was draped over blood-drenched one and Kyuhyun could feel his heart begin to sink, or more like, disappear all together.
“What have I done?!”
Kyuhyun lifted his eyes and looked into the familiar brown eyes of his victim. His suspicions were right.
“NO!!!!”
===============
A body fell into a bloody heap as Ryeowook strode closer to the cowering boy on the ground.
“Are you alright?” Ryeowook asked gently as he pulled the boy up to his feet.
“Y-yes,”
The boy was very pale and his voice shook, Ryeowook took pity on him and enveloped him in a hug.
“Don’t worry. The evil man is gone now.” he whispered into boy’s ear.
And then the boy began to cry hysterically.
