Story summary: Almost a decade since Frank Kohanek was forced by circumstance to accept the Embrace, the former detective is confronted with his first real dilemma in upholding the Masquerade. Frank has a chance encounter with a young man who can not only recognize Kindred, but seems to be seeking them out, and is shocked at the realization that this is Abel, a boy who was kidnapped from one of Frank's crime scenes a long time ago. Although Frank tries to warn Abel off, the boy has his own reasons for trying to find the Kindred who saved his life back when he was just a child, and finally encountering another Kindred after so many years only fuels his determination. Frank is then forced to re-examine the circumstances surrounding his own early encounters with Kindred and his inevitable Embrace, as well as his new-found loyalty to his own kind, even as he struggles to keep Abel safe from the dangers of that world.
