Grove City people, don't die on the way to school, OK? Please? For me?
I'm reading Orson Scott Card's Homecoming trilogy as research for Apocalyptica, which I need to get started on again since I'm all moved in and stuff. I've read them before, but not for years. They're very good, albeit a weird mix of Noah, Jonah, and the Israelites wandering in the desert. And sci fi thrown in for good measure. Not as good as Ender - but then, Ender is in a league all its own, isn't it?
Tonight was my first day at the Super Wal-Mart up here in Columbus. Or rather, in Lewis Center, which is about twenty minutes or so up the interstate from me. Not a bad drive, except I'm still not quite sure how to do it.
Anyway, it went OK, I think. They do everything differently there, and it's so huge, so there's a lot I don't know. The really frustrating thing is that they keep forgetting I come from an insanely small WalMart, so they assume I know things I don't. Also they assume I know their in-store procedures, and every store is different, so I really don't. I hate feeling like an idiot because I have to keep asking about things, but really guys, we never had to carry around our drawers and stuff. We just walked in and signed right on. You could have, like, six different cashiers on a drawer in a single day. Also, we never had to report back from 15 minute breaks. We just walked in and signed right back on. You could be there an hour and the CSM might come by and be like, "Oh, hey, you're back." Do I actually miss Bedford WalMart? Yes, I think I do. Strange.
But I think I'll be OK. I was a total dork, though. I was being trained on overseeing the Scan It Yourself aisles, which I'm like one of two people who actually kind of like it, apparently. The kid who was training me reminded me so much of Jay. I mean, I was almost instantly comfortable with the guy, because he was exactly like the OSGers I spent so much of my college career with. It may have freaked him out. But it was nice to see a familiar face, even if I've never met him before. I hope I can run into him again, just to get to know someone up here. Not that I don't love having my fiance here (or rather, won't love, since he doesn't move in until Wednesday, haha) but it'd be nice to have someone to chat with at work, too. To take the place of Stockman Tony. :)
