no actual spoilers
Just my thoughts about them.
I'm an unashamed spoiler whore. I love them. I collect every little hint and glimmer I can find, love piecing them together to gradually form a coherent picture, and love seeing how they fit in later when I actually get to see whatever it is. This goes for movies, tv, books, whatever.
I have never, ever understood the mindset of people who hate spoilers and avoid them like the plague. I respect it, because if they say it ruins things for them, I believe it. But I will never understand it. I am delighted, fascinated by them, and I enjoy the end result just as much and often more if I have been spoiled for it beforehand.
So, naturally, I am a member of spn_spoilers and I check it regularly, though not so regularly that I don't sometimes forget by the time that the actual episode comes around what is supposed to happen. I am hugely looking forward to episode 10, and relieved that it is finally here for more reasons than it simply meaning SPN is back from it's break, which is more than enough reason to be thrilled in any case.
Anyway, I have been reading back over the previous spoilers that we've had for episodes that have already aired, amusing myself by comparing them to what actually happened, and connecting dots if you will. And it strikes me as interesting that the title for episode 4 got changed. Also sad.
I remember people saying at the time it aired that it was a lame title (among other complaints that it was a rather weak episode overall, and it was a little disappointing because I had expected it to be better, but at the same time, there were things about it that totally ROCKED), and I remember being a little surprised at the title myself because it was odd, and awkward, but it sounded vaguely familiar, so I didn't realise until now that it was originally reported as having a different title.
In the first spoilers, actually in all the spoilers that I know of, it was listed as 'Afterlife'. This is a much, MUCH better title. In retrospect, maybe it's better that a--comparatively--lame episode had a lame title, but really. 'Children shouldn't play with dead things' should have been left as the tag line, and not the title. It's long, and awkward, and...out of place. But then, I had similar feelings about episode 2.01 and 2.02... not as bad, but similar.
All the episodes in Season 1 had simple, one or two word titles, except Dead in the Water and Dead Man's Blood which weren't too noticeably diversional. Suddenly in Season 2, the very first episode is the slightly unwieldy and not-quite-catchy In My Time of Dying. A record-breaking five words, and... just odd. Why? Suddenly it breaks the pattern. I thought maybe it was just because it was the first episode of a new season, but then there was Everybody Loves a Clown; again, four words, and strange, when compared to S1 titles. I like patterns. I dislike when patterns are broken, unless there is an obvious reason, and this is unsettling to me. Episode 2.03 was a bit of a relief, a return to S1-type titles with a single word, Bloodlust.
Then we get hit with episode 2.04, a whopping SIX words long and clunky. Awkward, and weird. Why change it? WHY? Afterlife was a perfectly good AND S1-style title! They should have kept it. They totally should have kept it. In retrospect, when I saw the title screen, I should have already known we had just hit the low point of S2. However on the bright side, it IS nice to think we've hit the low point so early--and it wasn't all that low. ;D
And the episodes since then have (mostly) shown a reassuring return to S1-type titles, though 'No Exit' irritates me because...it's odd even if it IS only two words. Then again, it does match Dead in the Water which was the only oddity of S1 so I can forgive it. I have not yet decided how I feel about the title for ep 2.13 which is listed on IMDB, in spite of there being no 2.12 reported there, although 2.12 has been reported elsewhere. I do not think it fits. So this disturbs me, after having returned to pattern, now to break it again. But IMDB has been wrong before, so I will not get shirty about it so far ahead of time.
I'm sure all this only bothers and/or interests me because I am a linguist, and much too fond of looking for and comparing links between words and types of words and phrases. But since I was thinking about it anyway, I thought I might as well post it.
