And this: "It's an interesting parallel to say that Dean doesn't see giving up as giving up on SAM in the same exact way that Sam never saw leaving for school as leaving DEAN."
You beat me to it. Because I didn't actually think of Dean's giving up as giving up on Sam....but it really is sort of true, and the parallel is fantastic, isn't it?
Of course he knew. I highly doubt that, in Jim's day, he would have walked around the town with a holster on his hip. He was an undercover hunter from what we know. In my head he was more like another Uncle to the boys - they were so young. They probably never saw him get into much action.
Either way, this guy isn't Jim. I think it's more like he's seeing the future he is trying to prevent come to life anyway right in front of his eyes. *wibble*
I think he just wasn't expecting it. And I highly doubt that, in Jim's day, he would have walked around the town with a holster on his hip. He was an undercover hunter from what we know. Dean seems awed/amused/astounded by the holster on his hip. He could be thinking how strange it seems for a Pastor to have a gun so readily accessible, or he could be seeing his future self, like I was.
I vote for the seeing echoes of 2014 coming to life right in front of him. Which in turn slowly acts to further his perspective that he needs to do something different to try preventing 2014 from coming about. Again. Because he's tried changing one thing, sticking with Sam instead of cutting him completely out, a'la The End, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything. So... what's left to try?
Oh yeah, back to Lucifer's taunt, "I know you'll never say yes [to Michael]... I win, so - I win."
Hmm. No wonder 'Michael stupid' thinking is starting to win out in Dean's mind.

Psalm 69 = Oh, Deann. D:
Yeah, I don't get why Dean acted so surprised to see a pastor with a gun holster. Did he just have a lapse of remembrance of Pastor Jim?
