I had to stop reading Terry Jones' "Barbarians". It was interesting getting the view from the oppressed side of things, rather than from the 'civilized' Roman view. However, I never did like the Romans, nor the Greeks, possibly because I know what my position in their societies would have been, as a woman.
The problem I had was watching history repeat itself over and over again in mass slaughters down though the centuries, and knowing that the cycle is continuing almost without let up and for the same stupid reasons. This is not Mr. Jones' fault, of course.
So I read Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal" again. In this case, of course, I was reading about the evils of greed and duplicity and finance, but not as many people died. And it's shorter.
