Actually a scenario of the the horse being freaked out by DH and unimpressed enough by his rider's lack of skill could lead to the horse simply throwing his rider and galloping off, which would shift how the entire battle gets fought.
I'd entirely forgotten about the guy who does the Modern History channel on YouTube, which was silly of me because I've watched a variety of his videos.
Mindstalk does have a point about medieval Europe not inventing warhorses; I only used that for an example since feudalism seems somewhat of a match to Rathillien. But one of the sources I found pointed out that war horses have been used throughout history and the size of a war horse depends on where and when, specifying that the Mongols conquered a good part of the world using horses that are essentially the size of a pony.
Given what you seem to be trying to set up in this, would it be possible that the warrior Jame is about to face would have selected a larger, but less trained or experienced horse, on the basis that bigger is better? Sort of "I'm a great warrior, see the size of my horse!"?
I think "bigger is better" is his creed. Which isn't to say that this war-horse might also be smart enough to know that he's at a disadvantage. It will be an interesting scene to write.
