So last night the co-workers had a team-building experience at Common Interests, a Karaoke bar off Burnet. So while I didn't sing (though you'd be surprised I had like 2-3 songs I was half tempted to try out; Closer by Trent being one of them) getting me out and about like this is akin to pulling teeth for me.
Of course everyone was enjoying copious amounts of alcohol but I played it smart and nursed a Guinness for the night. Me having the farthest to travel of the group is a reasonable excuse, nevermind wanting to avoid having to pay APD for another ticket (a story I forgot to post on the day of and should go back and add) or worse depending on just how badly things could have gotten.
Really I've only had a few times in my life where I've gotten more than happily buzzed and in each occasion I've either lived there or managed to get enough nap-time to let the kidneys filter out most of the toxins. Nothing major though since generally speaking I don't really need much to find amusement.
I did actually, if you forgive the lack of hearing after the fact, have fun. While there were a couple of singers who, for a lack of a better word, suck donkey balls unless you're to wasted to care, overall there were a few diamonds in the rough who not only nailed the song but also got the crowd going wild.
However I think I'm either getting too old, or just don't care, to repeat the experience. Not that I don't like some of the wild and crazy people I work with just that situations where I'm in a crowd of strangers tends to make me more closed and reserved than I normally am (and anyone who has known me long enough knows I'm wound pretty tightly as is).
Not that I don't mind the occasional side-trip into bizzaro land to grow out of stagnation. As the Chinese liken to say may you live in interesting times.
