It has been one week of non-stop writing, re-thinking plotlines I was absolutely positives I was going to go through with and contemplating if the future would be more technlogically based or have deevolved a bit.
So far I have managed to get past all of these. I did not reach the 11K suggested for the Saturday mark. I am sitting at a relatively safe 10,322 right now, and I can be happy with that. Part One is done and I spilled a teeny bit into Part Two. I couldn't have really expected to be farther at this point.
According to my stats, as long as I write 1654 words for the rest of the month I will reach the 50K just at November 30. I'm excited. :3
Here. Enjoy another snippet of my untitled novel. -giggles again- It's so weird to actually say "my novel".
Admitting she’d have to wait until tomorrow to speak to her father, Sophie shrugged her coat back on and went about wandering the streets. It shouldn’t have been too surprising that she felt the most relaxed when out, but it still was. Sophie had been ecstatic when Bart had found a place inside for them, but she couldn’t find a substitute for the feel of the wind on her face or the sound her sneakers made once they hit the sidewalk. Of course, right now, the thud was barely audible as the snow crunched underfoot. Sophie had no clue where she was going. All she knew was she needed to put distance behind her. She would have started running if she wasn’t afraid of slipping on some hidden ice. She could only imagine knocking her head on the way down and no one finding her until it was too late.
It didn’t take long before Sophie reached the port. She could tell herself that she had no clue the reason she was here, but Sophie never understood why someone would lie to themselves when, in the end, you weren’t fooling anybody. The spaceships were lined up on the pavement, packed tightly together, always anticipating another arrival. It had been steadily snowing all day, so the roofs were covered in a light powder. It almost looked like a drawing out of The Night Before Christmas. Sophie had never liked the story, but she would often find herself attracted to it one night at the library. She would memorize the texture and color as Santa Claus climbed down the chimney. Trees and presents continued on, but no one told stories of old Saint Nick anymore. It was one of the many forgotten aspects of the past, like the whales, that Sophie treasured. It was in that moment she almost swore she saw Santa.
She soon realized that it was the red uniform of a patrolman, not a kind saint with a sack full of toys. Sophie tried to duck behind a tank before she was seen, but it was too late. Sophie felt the collar of her coat in the meaty paw of the patrolman. His eyes were so dark they could be mistaken for all black. He sneered at Sophie, refusing to relax his hold on her.
“Whaddya think you’re doing sneakin’ around here so late?” he asked. The words came out more like a dog’s bark rather than a man’s voice.
“I was just taking a walk,” Sophie replied trying her best to look small and innocent. It was hard to look innocent, though, wandering the back streets at night dressed all in black and… ‘Oh, please don’t let him see the lock picking kit,’ Sophie thought as she smiled faintly. She just had to act as if she hadn’t done anything wrong and, technically, she hadn’t.
“You expect me to believe that? Do you think I fell out of the stupid tree yesterday?”
Sophie thought ‘yes’ but luckily said, “No.”
“Since I didn’t actually catch you stealin’, I can only give you a warnin’. I’ll be keepin’ my eye out for you girl. Understand?” He let Sophie go hoping his threat was intimidating enough to stop Sophie from sneaking around again.
Sophie nodded frantically as she ran a hand across her neck. There was a brush burn from her coast digging into the skin while the patrolman had held her. He walked off smiling wide. He was probably new and had never seen a crime, so Sophie was in the wrong place at the wrong time if he had decided to make some fun for himself.
I will eventually be posting the entire thing (whether it's finished in November or not) here for those who are interested. :)
