The story had been nagging at him for years, much longer than he'd been able to check its veracity, but it still took a while to build up the courage to be sitting waiting at horse's-midnight when Sascha came wandering into the kitchen in search of breakfast.
He'd done some prepwork, so that process took ninety seconds. Sascha sat down across from him, chewing on kasha, and raised an eyebrow.
Sverre struggled with the right words for a moment, then gave up. " . . Did you actually kill twelve men with a femur?"
Sascha blinked, face briefly blanking into the oakwood mask Sverre'd seen first, then laughed. Sverre caught his spoon as it tried to dive for the floor.
"--No," Sascha managed when he could breathe again. "Did kill a couple, though."
"Really?" Well, it made sense that there was some truth to the story. "Why a femur? Where'd you get it?"
"The cells' doorway," Sascha said, and when Sverre felt his face contort, shrugged. "The guards' commander had a theatrical streak--thought displaying a bone would keep us in line better."
He grinned when Sverre blinked at him, nonplussed. "I took it with us when we broke out. Planned to smack him in the head with it, because there are much more effective theatrics than a bone, but it was so old and dry it cracked on me. Big jagged ends--" he gestured. "They made a pretty good distraction for the visual feeds while we broke into the emergency air supplies and the tool lockers, so I still had 'em on me when we got to the commander's quarters."
Sverre reminded himself he'd asked. Nodded, carefully. "The story got around," he explained, and Sascha snorted.
"Theatrics," he grumbled, and Sverre snickered unwillingly.
