an annoyingly persistant leak that refuses to be found.

an introductory/cover letter so over-the-top ridiculous that it actually serves its purpose.

playing "identify the stain" with one's clothing.

thick, heavy air full of warm wet earth smells.

When Aodh showed up that afternoon to pick him up, Yasha bit back his first response and asked instead if Aodh'd had a good day.

Aodh gave himself a once over, from the weird waxy sheen on one of his shoulders to the faintly ichorous drip on the toe of his left boot, then shrugged. "Can't complain."

Yasha reached up and poked, gingerly, at the waxy thing. "What is that?"

"Um--" Aodh thought for a second. "Think tha' was part of t'summoning circle." He pointed at a broad reddish stain on his jeans, dappled through with spark-sized holes in the fabric. "Tha' was definitely part of t'summoning circle. Idiot forgot a layer for fire."

"Your boot is starting to smoulder," Screen said, her inflection just slightly edged towards Trap's.

Aodh looked down, then scuffed the ichor-covered toe through the dirt. "And tha'," he told Yasha solemnly, "'s why you don' invite jus' anything through a summoning circle."

*laughing* and he'd thought he'd stop and watch an idiot summon any old thing through a summoning circle? ...granted, okay, i could see the appeal. i might consider watching a reality show called "idiot mage."

"Now, in your letter you claimed to have just returned from an expedition to another world, where you had been carrying out studies into local mythology and folk-tales--"

The man sitting on the other side of the desk grinned at that, tanned skin settling into comfortable crows-feet around his eyes and mouth. "I did, yes. Did you have a question?"

"I--well, yes. The level of detail you've included in these myths and in your cover note is strictly incredible. What on earth inspired you to take this angle on your work?"

"Honestly? I woke up one morning and it was just there"I see. Do you have any more? The submission was a little overlength for our anthologies, but underlength for an independent publication.." the editor trailed off, a little curious as the smile lines deepened ( ... )
