Swallow's Tail - 'the smell of burnt hair' taennyn May 8 2009, 19:14:11 UTC
He woke abruptly in the dark of his bunk, choking off a yell at the dream. Gulping air, he stopped, then took a deep breath through his nose.

There really was nothing like the smell of burning hair to bring back ugly memories.

He dragged himself out of bed, getting dressed in four motions, and headed for the engineer's roost.

The passageway was brightly lit--horse's noon to his personal midnight--but it wasn't until he could hear Sascha cursing in some kind of bastard hybrid of Mansi and Polotsovy that he relaxed, just a little, the nightmare retreating back where it belonged. That wasn't the kind of cursing that went with a fight.

He grunted what passed for a greeting before tea when he got to the threshold, and Helena automatically lifted her chin in reply.

The smell was explained when Sascha turned his head, revealing a new configuration of knotted-back dreadlocks, the end of one singed cinder-dark and maybe half the length it'd been at dawn.

"How'd that happen?" he had to ask, and Helena covered her mouth with one hand ( ... )

mix of *wince* at the sort of dream that comes with that sort of odor for someone like him, and *HEE* at helena and sascha.

i liked: He grunted what passed for a greeting before tea... and the end of one singed cinder-dark and maybe half the length it'd been at dawn.
, phrasing-wise.

Yeah, that smell has no good associations for him.

Thanks. :) I'm kinda tangled with this lot of sparks--they're long for sparks, and sometimes weirdly phrased.

"She held up a snapped lace with her other hand, the ragged end freshly cut, then jerked her head towards the converter coil that warmed the inner walls of the horse, which was sitting exposed and looking oddly sullen, for a piece of inanimate machinery."

I love this line :)

but yeah, not a nice way to wake up.

Some Kind of Love Song - monkeys taennyn May 8 2009, 22:47:21 UTC
" . . If you tell me you've become king of the monkeys in my absence, I will be forced to do something drastic," Arianhrod said evenly, the crate she'd been hauling behind her dropping with a final kind of thud.

Takashi contrived to look innocent. "They're just monkeys!"

One of the primates yawned, fully exposing its fangs for a long moment before the mouth closed up again.

"That was neat--"

The next monkey choked on a fox head attempting to examine its tonsils from close range.

Arianhrod dragged a hand down her face, watching resignedly as the monkey coughed, turning a mildly betrayed look on its host, who was currently grinning a fox-grin, all points and mischief.

Then she stomped her foot, dust and animals rising as the air swept through the great space at near-whirlwind speeds, coiled up around the mistress of the house's hands, and banished through a newly opened wide window.

She could swear she heard fox laughter above the wind.

There was nothing quite like waking up to find the Morrigan grinning at you from close range to get the adrenaline going. Who needed coca or tea ( ... )

...okay, actual reply now.

The Morrigan is AWESOME.

I made an attempt at a real reply. Honest I did. The exclamation points just aren't going away.

:) Well, the sword's a calling card, and pretty obviously not that of just some ordinary death . . .
