"You don't want to walk through there," Belladonna remarked without raising her head from her front paws, just one of her eyes slitted open to watch him.

He paused, then tilted his head towards her. "Why not?"

She rolled over onto the shoulders, eeling her spine around on the pine-needle bed, then grinned at him, her tongue lolling down by her nose. "Smells like mud."

"It looks like grass."

"So walk through it and tell me if I'm wrong."

He crossed his arms across his chest, squinting at the disputed area, then sighed, reached out a hand and pressed on the air, concentrating.

The grass squelched under the pressure, water briefly showing as a thin film across the stalks, then disappearing under a layer of thick clay mud.

He could see smug teeth behind dark lips out of the corner of his eye, but when he looked over Belladonna was only licking her nose, still belly-up with her legs in the air.

"Thank you for the warning," he told her mildly.

She blinked, her nose lifting so she could actually see him.

And then not only not ignored, but thanked calmly. Hee.

I like their relationship. It's neat to watch.

Witches' Horses - 'cold metal' taennyn May 8 2009, 23:21:12 UTC
(while they're in the dead witch's terem)

It was cold outside the horse, more so than he'd expected based on the lights and the still-playing advertising on the walls. Not as cold as if the system was entirely broken, some residual circulation of gases and water in the coils beneath their feet and up the walls, but something was very badly wrong, somewhere.

The captain led him through hallways, great arched metal curves like a cathedral, large enough for a zastava to slide through sideways without scraping edges, and down into a horse-sized passage, the metal close enough to radiate its chill onto them, enough to make him shiver in his gear.

Then the space opened up again, and he could see Katya, standing near a massive coil, and it was all he could do not to call on names of faith at the size of the thing, the mass of potential raw power being conducted through that thing.

Again, I like the religious overtones to this bit in particular. <3
