got forcibly exiled, began cracking, fell in love, finished cracking after lover died. Definitely had sane days and not-so-sane days before she died; got much, much more weighted to the not-so-sane without someone to use as a reference point.

ah, thus 'Most of the time, he'd known she was growing old.' makes sense that he was already at least a little fractured.

And that he'd whistled up a coat for her on a good day, yup. :) I'd try an analogy like a house with an aging wiring system getting a lot worse after there was nobody around old enough to know how to take care of it, but there's emotions and such very much also at play.

*wince* very sad and kinda frightening, really, the idea of a last possible grounding connection lost.

*nods* He lasted a lot longer than he would have without her, I think. Though without her, he might have misplaced his body/identity enough that he wouldn't have wandered back, when he could. One of those situations that you can't quite predict?

I think it was age. There's certainly a possibility that he leaned a little too hard and accidentally accelerated the decline, but I don't get the feeling he was directly responsible.

Among other things, I cannot imagine time with her would make him more KINDLY inclined to the rest, considering.

Yeeeah, not so much. Especially as regards to his brother.
