Apparently my 'cat that ate the canary' and 'i am in severe pain' expressions are remarkably similiar.

Yes.. that lips-drawn-in-a-wince with clenched teeth and shining eyes can be so confusing. I best keep that in mind when punning. One should only suffer so much for a laugh.

Apparently it's very definitely a mask sort of expression. either I'm Up To Something, and waiting for the prey everyone else to notice, or i'm being Polite until you go away and I can go get ice or gnaw my arm off in peace while muttering to myself in ungrammatical russian.

I find "Excuse me." works rather well for the latter. Relief of pain generally presides over Victorian-era concepts of good manners... though it does take a lot of the drama and fun out of the *cough*alternatives*cough*.

I occasionally have a problem wherein I'm flared and I'm also the whole of the admin group (as the two others are out to lunch or errands or File Chasing), so must interact with the nice people at the front desk. Usually works out alright, though.
