I'm reading Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon and chuckling right now at the story of a pre-war US Marine in Shanghai who went into a Japanese bar and ordered, as far as I can understand, sushi. Mostly because his friends dared him to go, but also because he was curious.

But yesterday I also started to watch Shinsengumi!, a Japanese historical TV series, and in the first episode someone asked one of the main character why he wanted to go and see the American Black Ships, and he said "I want to see something I've never seen before", there following a discussion about how curiosity is appropriate for the young.

Curiosity is a great force and motivation for everything and one I totally understand.
