I have a cold again. A week after the last one. I haven't done that since I was nine. I need my brain functioning, dammit!

I've started reading Kathleen Mallory novels by Carol O'Connell and am having fun - not sure why (except that I tend to like books where characters are neat). After all, Mallory's a real Mary Sue: pretty, with amazing talents and striking green eyes. Oh, and she used to be a street kid, too, so check troubled past. Not that far from H*n*r H*rrington. And yet I like these books and can't stand H*n*r.

Maybe it's because I don't get a feeling we're supposed to admire Mallory's every action. She's not very noble and, in fact, is described as more or less sociopathic if I understand this term correctly. And other POV characters, while admiring her skills, see this very clearly and worry about that. And most of admiration is kept to people who have reasons to follow her doings, like quasi-parental figures.

A bit like a pretty female Miles Vorkosigan, though not quite. Of course, I haven't yet finished the first book... We'll see.

personal:grumblings, actually thinking aloud, books:sf, books:mysteries
