Monster High Ficlet: Not Always Better

Feb 25, 2011 00:05

ARG! I have had a heinous case of writer's block. The only thing I could get out was this little Monster High ficlet about a pre-MH recruitment Holt Hyde. Enjoy!

Not Always Better

Fiery hair crackled as its owner sat in a defensive position in the kitchen chair. Thirteen year old Holt Hyde sat stiffly, hugging himself tightly. Blue fingers dug into the red vinyl fabric of his jacket. It felt cool against his hot skin and was a welcome distraction from the serious tirade he was receiving from his mother. He didn’t think he deserved it, though he had earned it by her standards. He’d gone outside and he wasn’t supposed to, for obvious reasons.

His eyes darted from his untied shoes to his mother to the floor.

“Do you enjoy moving, Holt? Do you enjoy packing up your life and moving from place to place? Never being able to settle down? Never being able to stop? Do you enjoy driving me to worry about you? I certainly don’t! I wish you’d think about that once in awhile. I wish you’d think about someone other than yourself!”

Holt scowled and bit his lower lip fiercely, as if biting something back.

His mother noticed and raised an eyebrow.

“Do you have something to say for yourself, young man?”

“I don’t mean to make things hard,” he mumbled.

His mother sighed. She rubbed her greying temples with her hands.

“I know you don’t mean to...but Holt, you have to understand-” she started.

“I understand plenty. Being human is the best way to be,” he grumbled.

“What was that?” his mother pushed, hands on her hips and face stern.

Holt’s hair blazed bright and he brought his fist down on the table in an explosion of anger.

“Admit it! Life would be easier if I wasn’t a monster! If I was just some...nerdy, stupid human!” Holt spat.

Mrs. Jekyll sighed and hugged arms around herself in a way very similar to the way Holt had minutes before and he saw that.

“It would be easier Holt,” she said, nodding.

The fire in him died down and was replaced with something much heavier.

Holt felt his mother’s arms encircle him protectively and he awkwardly tried to place his hands around her as well.

“But Holt...easier isn’t always better,” she whispered.

With that, Holt squeezed his eyes shut to keep her from seeing how glassy his eyes were and he hugged her back honestly.

“I love you, Mom,” he said into her shoulder.

“I love you, too, sweetheart,” Mrs. Jekyll whispered into his ear.
