MONSTER HIGH FIC: Recruiter

OMG!  Monster High Ficlet!
And it is Deuce!fic.

Ha.

I love Deuce Gorgon, so naturally, I had to write a fic about him.  I basically wrote this to be as though Headless Headmistress is going around to all the Monsters scattered around the Earth and is recruiting them for Monster Middle School/High.

I imagine he and his mother lived in relative isolation, considering their abilities.

Enjoy!

Deuce pressed his ear up against the door and listened, being as careful as possible to remain quiet.

The boy was particularly curious.  He and his mother didn’t have many visitors outside of an occasional nymph or satyr, and the latter were never pleasant.  They’d mostly stopped coming after he’d started stoning them on purpose.  Oh, he’d been scolded for it, but it was nothing too serious.  It wore off in a few hours it wasn’t like his Mom was doing it.

Earlier, a well dressed woman had rode up on a horse and asked for him by name.  He didn’t know anyone off their tiny island even knew his name.  He’d been ordered to his room  and his mother was to speak to the stranger alone.  However, he wasn’t about to let that happen.

He swallowed as he heard his mother’s tail rattle and she hissed at something the woman said.

“You want my son..MY SON...to go to some school with other children?  Do you have any idea how cruel it is to present such an idea here?” she snarled.

“I assure you, we are well prepared to host many unique students.  We’ll start with Middle School and move them all up through High School together.  Something like what we are doing has never been done, and that’s a shame.  We’re going to give these students something we never had,”

“There is no ‘we’ here, only you.  I’m not in your club,” his mother spat, Deuce could practically hear the venom dripping through her words.

“Yes, you are.  We’re a particular kind of people and you and your son have been isolated from that for quite some time, as I understand it.  We are looking to change that.  Could I speak to Deuce?  This is relevant to his interests,”

“Your school has nothing to offer him,”

“Oh, I beg to differ,”

He heard shuffling, as if someone was getting something out of a satchel, followed by whispering.

“You can’t be serious,” he heard his mother growl.

“Oh, but I am deadly serious.  We’ll try them out right now.  Now, where has your son gotten to?” the stranger added loudly, as if she knew he was listening.

Deuce gasped and pulled a bandana out of his pocket and quickly tied it around his eyes before stumbling through the door.

“Here I am!” he offered.

He heard his mother’s tail rattle.

“Wonderful, do come join your mother and I, Deuce,” the stranger invited.

Deuce nodded and made his way over to them, tentatively feeling for a bench with his hands.  He knew his way around their rooms and corridors blindfolded, he’d learned when he was younger and nymph caregivers had come over regularly.  They’d tied a silk sash around his eyes so he didn’t accidentally stone them.  He could find his way around the building, but he couldn’t read the stranger.  She was so different from anyone he had ever met.  Still, he followed her directions.  His mother’s anxiety was tangible.  He should be nervous, but he wasn’t.  The stranger seemed so friendly and open that he couldn’t imagine she meant them any harm.  She appeared to be practically star struck.

“Shut your eyes, Deuce.  I’d like to try something,” she suggested, excitedly.

He did as he was told, mostly out of curiosity.

Deuce felt a rush of air hit his face as the bandana was removed.  He squeezed his eyes shut tighter, just to be safe.  The stranger slid something light, but hard onto his face.

“These are specially made sunglasses.  See?  You can look around and even look directly at others in them.  Open your eyes,” the stranger instructed.

Slowly, Deuce eased his eyes open, expecting a burst of green energy to erupt from them at any moment...but it never happened.  The world was covered in a grey filter, but otherwise, it looked the same as it always did...except for the fact that the well dressed stranger was staring into his eyes.

The woman was beaming practically from ear to ear.  He found himself mirroring her expression.  There was something terribly exciting about this.  He tugged his mother’s arm.  When he looker up at her, he saw that her own eyes were still covered by a long, silken sash that she always wore over them when they had company.  He looked around the room and back to the stranger who was looking into his eyes...making eye contact.  It was so interesting.  It was engaging, he could read her, he realized and it felt like he was included in the conversation completely for the first time.  Of course, she wasn’t really looking into his eyes, merely the lenses of the glasses, but it was the same effect.

“Mom!  Mom, this is so cool.  I can look at people and not worry about stoning them!  Try them, Mom!”

The gorgon shook her head.

“No.  They belong to you.  They were made for you so that you could attend classes with the other students and not have to worry about any unfortunate side effects,” his mother explained, sounding almost resigned.

“Well, naturally, we could increase the prescription and have a pair made for you as well, Medusa.  It can all be arranged.  You can both join our community,” the stranger explained.

Deuce smiled.

“Could you?  That’d be great!  Mom could really use them.  Then she could go outside and go visit Aunties and the nymphs.  They wouldn’t have to come here all the time and we could all go to the beach together! And...and I could play with other kids and they wouldn’t get hurt,” Deuce exclaimed, almost sliding off his bench in excitement.
    The stranger nodded.

Suddenly, she took her head off of her shoulders and held it in her lap.

“You know, young man?  I think you’ll fit right in.  I’m here representing a school, Deuce.  A school for people like you, your mother, and myself, and many other wonderful things.  We would be honored to have you,” she said, her disembodied head still smiling widely.
