A Humanist Anthem

Jan 15, 2012 21:28

So the grime-greased gears grind
For greed’s ghastly glory
Blistered and blind,
Some soulless solace they find,
But let’s hear mankind
Sing his own separate story:
No echo rings the limitations of our ability
As I yowl across the temples of loss,
“Humanity is nobility”

Our history, written in
Capitalist letters
Teaches a grin
To the cowards of din
Who doctor the spin
Of their self-spun fetters
Recounting our sins from a factory throne for a machine’s vanity
Like prophets berserk, they spit at our work,
But decency is humanity

For our shoulders we’ve won
The weight of the ages
Dragging that ton,
We seek haven - there’s none
Our effort’s undone!
Yet our heart turns the pages -
Taking our puny paycheques home to the only light we can see
Our love lights the gloom in which we prove human
Nature is decency

Let the eve lament life’s lies
Let the dawn sing us an ode -
Blinders for our eyes
Is all our money buys
And gears hypnotize
Themselves into a barren code
Though the distillery spews forth deathly faith in fumes of servility
Through the clouds I’ll yell ‘til it rains in hell -
Let our genius tell what our love knows well,
And through a breaking spell, propel - propel -
“Humanity is nobility”
