We are ashes if the dream in which we were conceived
Has starved, been extinguished, unstoked and ungrieved
Our mind clashes with the borders of a measured universe
Between ashes and monsters, ashes are worse
Built from charred landscapes, a strange machination,
I stand in place of the flame in my imagination
Lifting smoky limbs, raising glowing eyes,
Shall we be sooty beasts for the sun to despise?
Graceful in our silence, yet somehow perverse,
But between ashes and monsters, ashes are worse
I shall embrace the wind as it comes for me, we’ll see
The toothless grin of an aimless society, we’ll flee;
The universe is as wide as it is hungry, we’ll be
Lost but wise, heirs to nothing’s nobility
I wanted to call you, I wanted to hear
Your voice through the night, love through the fear
A sound to ripple through these shallow answers
And bring to life these pale smoke dancers
I wish to be near you, in empires no one remembers
As we comb through the ashes, heirs to embers
And we’ll see monsters in mirrors and dogs in our purse
But between ashes and monsters, ashes are worse
I shall embrace the wind as it comes for me, we’ll see
The toothless grin of a lonely society, we’ll flee;
The universe is as wide as it is hungry, we’ll be
Lost but wise, heirs to nothing’s nobility
But if the wind should not fly
To release rubies to the sky
Making glowing treasure of this ember empire
If as ashes we’re bound
To this unprinted ground
To an unsettled debt to an unlit fire
Remind me, unbind me from this ashen pall
We but sinned for a wind that never came at all
Seduce me, reduce me to this life of despair
The crux of pleasure in the unmoving air
I wanted to call you, I wanted to hear
Your voice through the darkness, some love through the fear,
Ugly and tainted, but our shame is our curse;
Between ashes and monsters, ashes are worse
