We Were the Lucky Ones

Am I the anti-alchemist?
Damn the soul that weeps
Over love that he has missed
For the foolish dreams he keeps
There is no solace- we choose our lots
And each tried path unwinds
To say all our thoughts are useless thoughts
And sprung from wasted minds

But these hands are strong, and the future lies untold
Am I the anti-alchemist? See what becomes of gold
We yell to the sky, like we're no man's sons
When all along we were the lucky ones

Shall I undo you?
Are we forever unprepared-
Always running into
The fact that we're running scared?
Are you the alchemist?
Your skin turns sunlight to gold
And it taunts me, must Time insist
That ages and ages unfold?

Beauty tarries not for its lover, but innocence we can retain
Curse the lips that say it's over when these passions still remain
We feared ourselves, and a part of us still runs
When all along we were the lucky ones

So lay it down and bury it
I may rebuild it bit by bit
Lay it down, forget my name
How dare we pretend this could ever be the same?
I'll find my way back to your heart, well who knows?
I'll find my way back to your heart, well who knows?
There's a demon in me, he tears me apart as he grows
I'll find my way back to your heart, well who knows?

And you can have me, any way you want, you know
I am for sale and the price is so very low
We clench our fists, stick to our guns
When all along we were the lucky ones
