25 December, 1691
Dear Lord,
Today is the day my grandmother said is the day Your Son was born. She told me that in England they do observe this Day with reflection and celebration. But here that is not our way. We believe that the Day of Your Sacrifice is unknown and therefore every day should be lived in His Name and lived in His Honor. However, the Reverend Parris made a point of reminding me to write in this book and thank You for the community and life I have been given.
Mistress Kimble and I cleaned all the shelves in our root cellar then took all the extra corn over to Sarah Goode. Even though we are told this Day is not different from any other, in tribute and devotion to you and Your Son on this Holy Day, we cleaned Goode’s cellar, freshened her bed pads and dusted her bed curtains. Master Kimble also cleaned her flue, as he hadn’t done it before the cold set in. Master and Mistress Kimble believe we should do good works for our community. That is how many in our Salem Village remember the day celebrated in our mother country. It was very cold in Goode’s house without a fire. In respect to her age and frailty, we sent Mistress Goode to the Goode Nurse’s tavern. She helped the Nurse family clean their supply closets and wash all the lamps.
