China:
A new Japanese text book glosses over Japanese war crimes during World War II.
Japan's Prime Minister still pays homage to Japanese war heroes (people referred to as war criminals by everybody else).
Japan still refuses to apologize to or compensate its victims.
Japan's Rebuttal:
It's a very rarely used textbook-- for junior high kids.
The opinions in the textbook lie far to the right of mainsteam Japan.
All necessary apologies were innate to the peace treaties.
Japan has apologized to China directly 17 times.
A few innocent Japanese have been attacked in China. Japanese business, some Chinese owned, are being vandalized.
Chinese textbooks are just as guilty of evading history.
Cang:
The moment the Chinese protests turned violent is the moment the protests turned stupid.
Although the Chinese have a valid concern over Japan's attitude toward its own previous misdeeds, it is a hypocritical one.
I think Japan doesn't want to apologize because that could lead to reparations, and there are a lot of reparations to be paid indeed.
A treaty IS NOT an apology. You don't sign a treaty because you're sorry, you sign a treaty because you want the other guy to stop bombing the fuck out of your country.
Japan should apologize. So should China.
