I finished watching "Moon" last night, and I am very, VERY impressed. If you are reading this message, you need to watch "Moon".
Duncan Jones wrote the story for actor Sam Rockwell, after they couldn't agree on a role for him in another project. Rockwell requested a science fiction role, and DJ wrote "Moon" for him. Jones also directed the film, which was made for the paltry sum of US $5 million.
The technology style of "Moon" is a throwback to, or at least references: "Alien", "Blade Runner", "Outland", "Silent Running", and even, indirectly, "2001". Most of the effects were model miniatures, which were appropriate to the story, and not distractingly silly (ok, except maybe a ball swinging too quickly on a crane).
What makes "Moon" such a treat, though, is the story. "Moon" is intelligent science fiction, addressing threshold technologies (stuff that may already be in progress in some secret lab), economics, corporate ethics, and the human effects of these issues.
"Moon" is PURE science fiction, unpolluted, undiluted, by Fantasy, Magic, or Religion. It's about US, and OUR universe, and where we might be going.
Part of what makes "Moon" a great movie, is the same thing that made "Terminator" (the original) such a great movie: Duncan Jones, like James Cameron, has something to say, as opposed to an overblown scheme to attract audiences and collect their money.
Duncan Jones has ideas about OUR future, and passion for those ideas, and talent as a writer and director. I look forward to more of his work.
I'd like to see him take a crack at developing John Connor, at giving broad audiences a reason to care about him again.
