Name: Rude
Age: 31
Personality: What most people see when they look at Rude is a taciturn man, hidden behind sunglasses and an unreadable expression, calm yet perfectly capable and willing to bash somebody’s head in if the situation calls for it. Those who stick around him for a while quickly learn that there’s more to him than that. He spends more time observing than talking, and when he does talk it tends to be something meaningful. He cares deeply about people and tends to keep an eye out for people close to him even if they may not realize it. In general, he would rather put himself in danger than watch someone he cares about get hurt. He’s not overly protective, though. Being a Turk means people you care about are going to be in danger on a regular basis, and he generally assumes that people will be able to take care of themselves.
Strengths: Rude can be considered a strong person, physically and emotionally. He has a large build and is skilled at fighting with his fists. He doesn’t have much in the way of formal education, but he has a good head on his shoulders and knows how to think on his feet. In terms of relating to other people, he can be a good listener and a good friend. Can fly a helicopter. Makes good pancakes.
Weaknesses: He has a tendency toward the self-sacrificing, which can get him in trouble. He will occasionally get himself into things a little over his head just because he didn’t want to involve anyone else. This also means he’s the type to suffer in silence, and more likely to quietly brood over problems rather than dealing with them directly.
History: Rude grew up in the slums of Midgar and eventually became a Turk. The first we see of him is in the Before Crisis timeline, at which point he is already a fairly high-level Turk. During that time, he fell in love with a woman named Chelsea, but the relationship never went anywhere because she was an Avalanche spy. She had feelings for him as well, but rather than deal with conflicted loyalties she opted to just walk away. Beyond that, he is the long-time partner of Reno and they are often seen together. In the original game, he and Reno appear several times in pursuit of Cloud, but they repeatedly let him get away. After the collapse of Shinra, he chose to stick with Rufus, along with Reno, Tseng, and Elena. Despite the history between them, he no longer had any reason to be enemies with Cloud and his group, and ended up fighting alongside them against Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo.
(A note: The bit about making good pancakes is a throwback to
this story by Bethgael, which has generally affected my headcanon and is just a great story. If you have time, go read it.)
