i've just closed the lid on the breadmaker and selected my bread type. note to self: always look at baking time while choosing which bread to make. the french bread i've chosen will be finished one hour after my stew. excellent timing that definitely fails to satiate my desire for fresh bread with dinner. oddly, i'm a better breadmaker when i don't use my machine but i like its ease and the decidely unique character of each loaf that falls from its pan. sunken? didn't rise? bigger on one side than the other? a little heavy or dense? no problem! it's fresh.

the stew is a recipe from a coworker and the scent is titillating. like all good north carolinians, jeremy and i hit the grocery store this morning to prepare for the oncoming "storm." we actually went because it was time and our food was low but i like to join the massed fear of the weather, however skeptical i am of its impact. our grocery cart made me content. we've picked up a thai soup and bought, for the first time, our own tofu and peanut sauce to make stirfry. i'm delving into the world of tofu this year, becoming more in love with this animal-friendly protein. i think it'll help me in my slow shift towards vegetarianism. it's funny. i've been a raging carnivore my entire life yet most people i encounter expect me to be vegetarian...i may one day fulfill their expectations in the quest to be healthier as a person and wiser as a consumer.

jeremy and i re-dyed my hair today. i was worried how the blonde would take after last month's plunge in red, but i'm left with a vibrant strawberry blonde that works well with my short locks. i've spiked it...and it's falling and curling in spunky, funky ways. all in all, i'd say i look rather cute.

'bad weather' days are beautiful. the fire's going, i'm reading, and marcus is curled on his blanket in front of the fireplace. we took him outside for his first snow...but he mewed so pitifully that we stayed only long enough to capture it on film.

i realize that i'm writing as i've been reading. my newest acquisition, "the curious incident of the dog at night-time," is a simple pleasure. i've been prolifically reading these past two weeks. last weekend i finished the three books i expected to last me a week, leaving me restless monday-thursday night. i've restocked, though, and i think i'll have enough to last a short while. thank heavens for public libraries and outstanding authors...
