WARNING: War story from work ahead. This one is particularly bloody, so if you don't like these, skip the first paragraph.
So last week at work, I witnessed the most gruesome thing I have ever seen in my life. The scene in the room was more bloody than any horror movie I've seen. I won't go into a really detailed recount of the situation, but to put it bluntly, I had a patient die from a ruptured pulmonary artery. She went from walking, talking, laughing and loving life at 9pm to spewing blood uncontrollably at 11pm. Imagine if her lungs were a sink; when the water gets to full in the sink, it just overflows and goes everywhere. The heart was pumping blood to the lungs, eventually filling them up, and then the blood had nowhere else to go except out through her nose and mouth. Needless to say, her fight was very short, and she passed quickly. But not without first covering everything and everyone in blood. It took housekeeping staff an entire 12 hours to detail the room top to bottom and get it clean (the CPR made the sprays of blood go EVERYWHERE).
It was traumatic for everyone who was there that night. Fortunately for me though, I had five days off after the incident to process everything and take some time away from the hospital to recover from that. The images will always haunt me, but it was nice timing to get away and forget about it all for a while. Well, I went back to work last night for the first time since the incident, and what do I find in my box but a card from my boss. Inside is a copy of an email that was sent to my boss. It's from the House Supervisor, Mary, who was during the Code Blue. Mary's email is basically doting on me and our floor for doing the best job we could with everything and for handling the situation well. My boss adds in the card a very impersonal note about how we are "Shining Stars!" and she's proud of us, and then there are 2 movie tickets tucked inside the card. MOVIE TICKETS? Her note just kind of made me sick. This thing that happened was not something you can just gloss over and be like, "Great job, kid, you're a star!". And what the fuck do movie tickets have anything to do with ANYTHING? Like, "Oh, I heard someone bled all over you and died basically in your arms... here's some movie tickets, go have some fun!" I don't know, it just seems stupid to me. I mean I kind of understand her thought process, she is basically saying that I should go do something fun since I went through something stressful, but what an odd way to say that! She could have at least connected the two with her note... I don't know.
Anyway, in other, more happy news, my dad called me today and told me that his sales team at work is in first place to win an all inclusive trip to Atlantis next February, and he officially invited me to go with him if he wins! I really hope he does! I've always wanted to go to the Bahamas and this trip sounds amazing. One week, 5 star everything, paid meals, swimming with dolphins, $500 spending money per person, flying out from Austin straight there. He told me not to get my hopes up too much just in case they don't win, but my dad wins almost every competition that his company has, and now that he's told me about this one, I can't NOT be excited!
I went to Sea World with my mom, brother, and sister last week. The pictures are posted up on facebook if you'd like to see. It was pretty fun. I have to admit, I was a sourpuss for a while because it was SO HOT and I started to get a really bad headache from being dehydrated and not wearing my glasses. The headache turned into nausea and then I was being a real jerk. I feel bad, because my mom just wanted to take her kids out and have some fun, and I feel like I wasn't the most fun I could have been. But overall, the day turned out well. My Neutrogena SPF 100 did me well and I didn't get a spot of sunburn except on the top of my head in the part of my hair. Haha. It itches now, so that sucks, but my the rest of my skin is happy.
My sister Katherine (my half-sister on my dad's side) was the Athlete of the Week last week on News 8 Austin. I am so proud of her! She won Nationals for her age/weight division this year, after only boxing for two years! She is awesome! Link
here for the story. You can watch the video there, too.
Well I am starting to get a headache so I better go find some caffeine quick. I got canceled from work yet AGAIN tonight, so I need to find something to do!
