Well I'm glad you asked!
[Oh god. Do you wish you'd just let the damn thing go to the brig yet?]
Scientific inquiry is not limited to merely experimental process. Ethical and social constraints limit the scope of such experimentation, or at least make the funding necessary for such endeavors impossible to find. Therefor, 'rough' or rather discovery-based science is a thriving realm of possibility, despite the relative imprecision of the conclusions drawn. This facilitates a longer slope of communal acceptance.
Another good example is paleontology!
Of course, since certain limitations prevent me from exploring the subject at hand directly, second-hand information-gathering is the first step to comprehension! It would be irresponsible to skip this important preliminary stage and leap directly to a more observational post. Besides, it's a lot easier to just ask people directly before trying to sneak around in this shell, don't you think?
Of course, if the circumstances weren't so restricted, I'd try stealth anyway.
[Musashi certainly wasn't thinking about disobeying the explicitly-phrased order to stay out of the brig, right?]

[What? A Tachikoma disobey orders?! PERISH THE THOUGHT.]
