The war had broken out early this year. At that time Talia Gladys, given her position as captain of ZAFT’s premier battleship Minerva, had no choice but to fight. Now, sitting in the Captain's cabin at the ZAFT Gibraltar base, she began to doubt if that had been a wise decision. Fatigue was one thing, but what truly exhausted her was the emotional torment of watching the wanton death and destruction wrought by both sides.

Talia closed her eyes and settled into the soft leather of the armchair. She felt like an old, world-weary lady. She'd been flung from the safety of her home into the violence and death of war. The knowledge that she could die any time during this war tasted like bile in her mouth, since she had so many loose ends to tie up - especially with him.

Frowning, she tried to block the memories but they came in a relentless wave. Theirs had been the dream relationship she'd always hoped for and, despite their bittersweet parting, she never lost hope that they’d be together again.

If I survive this, perhaps..., she sighed to herself, ignoring the cynical voice that scoffed in her head:

Listen to yourself. You think he wants you? You left him and had a family. Can't take that back, Talia.

A sharp knock on the door interrupted her sad thoughts, followed by a voice that said, “Excuse me? Captain Gladys?”

Talia sighed out loud this time and turned to the door. She debated on whether to open the door or pretend she was asleep when the knock came again, more insistently this tim. “Captain? Pardon me, but I was ordered to deliver something important to you.”

Resigned, she stood and opened the door. A young officer saluted smartly at her. “Lieutenant Morrey ma’am.”

She returned the salute. He dropped his hand and held out a brown rectangular box, around a foot and a half long. “From Chairman Dullindal, ma’am.”

Her heart skipped a beat but she managed to take the box with steady hands. She thanked the officer and closed the door, then turned to the box with wonder, marvelling at the coincidence. Heart pounding in anticipation, she strode to the table and quickly opened the box - and promptly gasped.

Inside, a lovely bouquet of white lilies, lisianthus, freesia, blue belladonna, and purple iris lay on a rich mass of pale green wadding. An envelope peeked out among the flowers. Now her hands were shaking as she opened it and pulled out the card. As she read, her face brightened with a happy smile.

Dear Talia,

“Say it with flowers”, as the old advertisement goes. One thing I want to say is thank you for all you hard work. I truly appreciate it. You and your crew have been invaluable to the war campaign. But business aside, another thing I want to say is, I could not resist buying these flowers for you! They remind me of you - lovely, full of springtime cheer. So here they are. I hope they cheer you up like they did me. But what would truly delight me is seeing you. May I, when you get back? Or I might not even wait till you do. You might see me one of these days.

Take care always, my dearest.

Thinking of you,

Gilbert

Smiling, she returned the card to the envelope.

So there is hope, after all.
