Day 1 of my trip to Phoenix

Feb 14, 2006 15:23

As part of my quest to take more risks and worry less, I flew alone to join Mike at race car driving school, in Tempe/Phoenix, Arizona.

The airport in Detroit went pretty well. I just kept asking questions until I was where I was suppose to be, with a boarding pass in my hand. The flight itself went well, and I sat with a 12 year old named Emily, who's family are missionaries to the Muslims in Lebanon. They live in Tyre. She was quite chatty, and we enjoyed a pleasant flight. However, the trip from the Phoenix airport to the hotel did not go well.

I called the hotel for a van, and they said it would take 20 minutes. 20 Minutes later, a van pulled up, a boy asked if I called and was told 20 minutes. Yes, as a matter of fact I did. I showed him the address I wanted to go to and got in the van. When we got to the hotel, I went to the front desk to get an envelop with my room key, that Mike had left for me. No envelop. No room. No Mike at that hotel. Egads!! I was at the totally wrong hotel. I was actually 30 or 40 minutes away from where I was supposed to be. Now I'm stranded, the van has gone, its too far to walk. I decide to call a cab. An hour later, a cab comes. I throw my bags in the trunk and we leave for a massive traffic jam that makes it take over an hour to get to my destination. Meantime, Mike has returned and found out I never showed up. The courtesy van from the real hotel couldn't find me. He panics and calls a dozen times, except of course my phone is now in the trunk of the cab. He calls Erin to see if she's heard from me. Now she's thinking I've been abducted and am laying in an Arizona gully. By the time I get to the hotel, Mike's gone to look for me. My whole family was in a tizzy. Let's just say I don't think I'll fly by myself to Brazil or any country that I can't speak the language.

On a fun note. Mike had Godiva chocolates, a card and a rose for me for Valentines day, and we went to a Mexican restaurant that had the hottest salsa Mike had ever eaten. They use New Mexico chilies. Those babies are HOT! (The only food I've ever had hotter was when Tina dared me to eat Thai food hot). I had chicken and cheese enchiladas with green sauce and a margarita. MMMMM.
