sunrise, sunset...

Another day another approximate 60 dollars and 72 cents. I leaned on the counter of the Magic Box boredly, I'd already gone through all the receipts and cleaned out some of the shelves of the basement, a not so popular job. Who would want to clean up spilt jars of rat innards and mummy brains? I did, because I was so freaking bored. There were ( Read more... )

Ooh, a Magic Box shop. Sunnydale is just crawling with witchy demony types. After walking around for a couple of hours, I decided that Sunnydale is really bloody boring during the daylight hours. So many unsuspecting citizens wandering around doing their unsuspecting things. They're so much fun to play with at night, but during the day they're rather boring. I still had a wad of cash in my wallet from the last, very successful businessman that I'd finished off before coming here. What can I say? A girl needs to live. And until I could secure some gigs for me at the Bronze, the dishonest way would have to do.

I pushed open the door to the magic shop and stepped inside. Ah, sweet darkness and cool air. Smells like herbs, books and...power. I like this.

I watch as a petite girl with choppy brown hair and big eyes saunters in, "Hello, welcome to the Magic Box. Is there anyway I could assist you?"

I look her over once more, something's different about her. I'm not a demon anymore, but I could still feel it. She couldn't be a vampire, she just walked in from the sunlight. Maybe she was a half-demon. I was really curious, "By the way," I said casually, "what are you?"

"What am I?" I repeated, turning to look at the girl who approached me. That was rather straightforward. Don't get me wrong, I like straightforward people, but this was a little unorthodox. Her word choice was interesting. Not 'who', but 'what'. There was an aura about her...

I smiled sweetly, knowing well the sort of expression that could be achieved with a round face, wide eyes and full lips. "We don't usually ask that sort of questions of strangers," I said conversationally. Maybe I could make friends here. Friends that would be worth not eating. Hanging out with Oz was getting boring.

We don't usually ask that sort of questions of strangers,

I raised an eyebrow at her, "Yes well I tend to ask the wrong questions sometimes, the inappropriate ones, but I know that something's up with you..." The way she reacted was unlike the way most people would react, usually by backing away and exiting the store slowly. I think she knew I was onto something.

"Something's up with me?" I raised my eyebrows sceptically, looking this girl up and down. She was straightforward indeed. I would've made a note of seeking her out next full moon if I wasn't starting to like her.

"Something's up with you too, or you wouldn't have been able to tell anything about me," I said calmly, turning to pick up a crystal from a shelf and examine it carefully. "So what are you? You have an aura." I wasn't worried about telling her anything about me, because if she could tell that there was something strange about me, there was probably something strange about her as well that she wouldn't want people to know.

I stuck out my lower lip a little, "I'll tell you what I am if you tell me what you are..." I said, sounding a tad like the squalling children that were in here not too long ago.

I looked her up and down again, hoping for some sort of clue as to what kind of demon she was. I had absolutely no clue.

I crossed my arms and stuck out my hip, smiling up at the girl in a challenging manner. "Well, I'm mostly human," I said evasively. "But sometimes I'm not human at all." I figured if she could tell I wasn't normal, she could figure the rest out for herself.

"Your turn."

I smirked at her, "Yes I could tell that, but what are you? Part demon? What kind? Obviously not a vampire..."

"I used to not be a human at all, and now I'm compeletely a human."

I smiled sweetly. "Of course I'm not a vampire. Do I look dead? Usually I'm like this, but sometimes I grow fur and eat people, if that gives you any more information."

I looked her up and down again and shrugged. "I'm Veruca. I'm here with a friend of mine. He's like me, maybe you know him? I hear that the demons are pretty tight in this town. Especially after the Slayer bit it."

"Oh a werewolf!" Why didn't I think of that... the friend she's visiting must be Oz, Willow's old boyfriend, before she went all gay.

I hear that the demons are pretty tight in this town. Especially after the Slayer bit it."

I widened my eyes a bit, "Well, I suppose that's one way to put it, but we do have another slayer..."

"Oh, really?" I raised my eyebrows in surprise. No one ever told me that. I guess that would put a little damper on my fun. But only a little. If Buffy couldn't get to me, I wasn't afraid of this new Slayer.

"That's interesting. She a friend of yours?"

I raised an eyebrow and let out a laugh, "Faith? No, not all. I try and steer clear of maniac ex-killers. Well, I guess I am one, but that's not the point..."

I wonder what this girl was up to, she seemed okay as a human, but werewolves can get pretty violent, I hope she had a cage, like Oz.

"Maniac ex-killers, huh? This place is full of them!" I laughed, tossing my head back. "So this slayer is a killer, too? That's interesting." I smiled, my usual crooked smile. "And so were you. What were you, anyway? Before you became human. I told you my secret." I tilted my head to the side and watched her carefully, the way I sometimes watched my prey.

"I was a vengeance demon. I avenged wronged women by punishing the males that did them wrong. Exciting stuff actually. I was quite famous in the demon realm, but then the usual black hat ending, some do-gooders come and rip my powers from me and viola. Here I am, stuck in this body, working the counter of a magic shop. Not to say I don't mind. I enjoy the money. Also, I have a boyfriend."

I wondered if I was rambling for a moment, but then I remembered that I didn't really care if I was or not.

"Vengeance demon?" I raised my eyebrows. This was interesting stuff. Exciting, really. "That sounds fun. So you what, like turn them into toads and stuff? That's a lot of power." I lowered my voice. "Shame to have lost it. I wouldn't give this up - this being me - for anything."

I moved to a different shelf, examining the merchandise. "Did you ever think of going back? Of course, this boyfriend would kind of stand in the way, wouldn't he? One of the do-gooders?" I smiled at her, lowering my head. I knew the type. Oz was one.

"I did try at first, but that was before Xander. But that failed and then I found Xander. It's better this way. That's what he says. I mean, I know it is."

I knew that being a human was more helpful and better but she was right, sometimes I did long for some avenging, but Xander quickly would erase those feelings from me.
