Was it wrong of me to be having so much fun? Watching as Lindsey picked out a gelding for himself, and seeing his expectant face as he waited for me to do the same? I made a show of looking all the mounts up and down, keeping my expression neutral. I didn't want to give the game away. If he was having fun with showing me the ropes, then I was gonna oblige. Until I could pull the rug out from under him of course.
I pointed to a feisty looking black mare. "I want that one, she looks cute." I announced with a grin. Actually, she looked like she had an ornery temper and then some. Lindsey grabbed my elbow and shook his head emphatically.
"No, darlin' she's too much for me to handle, let alone you. How about this dun?" He indicated a placid mount who looked more interested in the grass on the ground than us. Sure if you wanted to stay in first gear...
Finally I sighed and went over to a pretty bay. Another mare, but nuch less snippy and by the long legs on her, she'd be good at a gallop.
Lindsey smiled and nodded to the ostler. "We'll take this one."
When the mount was finally saddled I went up to it and pretended to not be sure how to mount it. Lindsey obliged by coming over and helping me up into the saddle, he even gave my rear end a playful swat as I settled into my seat. I ooohed and aaahed at him as he manfully adjusted the stirrups for me.
Finally we were both ready to leave, Lindsey leaping astride his own horse like it was second nature. The ostler stuffed some packages in Lindsey's saddle bags, lunch I presumed. We headed out into the woods, taking a slow pace, and Lindsey watching me carefully, giving instructions on how to sit, how to hold the reins, how to feel the horse beneath me and send it signals with my thighs.
Finally I could contain it no more, and let out a playful chuckle.
"Last one to that ride is a rotten egg." Then I let out a whoop and spurred my bay into a gallop, heading for the ridge at a breakneck pace, and finally allowing myself to ride as I knew how to ride. I glanced back at Lindsey and laughed at the sight of him belatedly following after me, with a slightly stunned look on his face.
Fooled ya...
