And don't hold it against me that I am officially a fan of a badly-written children's fiction series.
Although I am not one who read the 7th book of Harry Potter in the first 24 hours of having it. In fact I still don't have my own copy. Despite reading the 6th book entirely myself while Jessica was away, we are now back to the original way of doing things, and she is reading the 7th book aloud to me. It's interesting now, though, because she had already read all the other books she read aloud to me, but now she and I are experiencing it for the first time together. We've only reached chapter 5, so we have a ways to go. Can't wait. Nothing about the story, but the two quotations at the beginning: I liked the Aeschylus one, but the Penn one was kinda dumb.
In other news...
I got a call from Molly about two weeks and ago to catch up on things and to talk about when I'm returning to M-town. Other topics included the upcoming renewal of our lease, the landlords'/repairmen's inattentiveness to her over the past 6 months in my absence, AND the raise in rent by $200/mo. Options were discussed and Molly made suggestions for new places. As of now, we have submitted our formal notice to not renew our lease at the Gilmore, and we have also put in applications for a place at Kimbrough Towers, about 5 blocks down Union from the Gilmore. It's a 5th floor, 2-bedroom place with a dishwasher. The building has coin-operated laundry facilities, well-lit parking lot (or a garage for a monthly fee), and even a gym. Also we don't have to arrange our own utilities, just cable/internet/phone. All of this for less than last year's rent at the Gilmore. PLUS they have a 9-month lease option, which we are taking. All of this is great, I just have moving to look forward to when I return to Memphis around the 9th or 10th.
I received an email last week from a woman who had gotten my name from my high school Latin teacher as a possible tutor for her son, a rising freshman, switching from public middle school to St. Andrew's. He's supposedly completed Latin I, and so took a placement exam to start Latin II in the fall, but didn't quite as well as the Latin Dept would prefer in order for him to be fully prepared. So I started with him last Thursday afternoon, after meeting briefly with Parva at the high school (they were practicing certamen for Nationals.. awww) just to figure out what to focus on with the kid. We met for about an hour and a half on Thursday, Friday, and today, and I spent a little time at home typing up a condensed review sheet for him. I've already earned nearly $200. This I am completely fine with, especially with the upcoming extra expenses of switching apartments. I may only be meeting with him a few more times because he's going to camp for three weeks on Sunday, but I am SO okay with this whole tutoring thing..
This week (yesterday) my mom and I began work on transforming my (or my sister's when I'm at school) room in paint and patterns. Once upon a time I liked the color pink... or maybe my mom thought I liked the color, and so when we had this house built (14 yrs ago) the decorative scheme of my room was pink and floral with matching duvet and shams for the bed. This was fine until I was about 13 when I no longer liked pink but definitively liked blue and also sometimes green. There was no blue in the wallpaper border or duvet however, so my new wall color was a dull hospital green. Now that Caroline lives in my room more than I do, she's had her say in the matter as well. Now the whole decorative scheme is being chucked. new duvet, new quilt for the bed. Therefore no more floral border, even the pink floral wall paper of the adjacent bathroom is being scrapped. What color will the walls now be? The most beautiful color of blue ever with a cute little kiwi colored border with some custom spots. The bathroom will be mostly green with blue stripes. And all of this will be finished before Princess Caroline returns from camp on Saturday. I'm not bitter or anything. It's just a good thing that I really enjoy painting.
Okay, it's really time for bed.
